Problems with avast 4.6 pro under Windows Vista (Longhorn)

For a couple of weeks, Windows Vista (Codename Longhorn) is available in its Beta 1 Version for developers. One of the most significant problems seems to get a good virus protection running under the new Windows.

  • McAfee Entertprise 8.0i encounters problems with the Update function, so the virus definitions won’t be up to date.
  • Norton 2005 Professional cannot be installed at all.
  • Avast 4.6 Pro can be installed an is running well. Still, the internet (using IE) will be blocked unless the avast Web Shield is stopped (pausig the web shield will not work).

I hope this will help others to protect their new Windows Longhorn OS.

Cheers

There are actually a few more issues with avast! (and I’m sure with other products as well, if you check deeper). It will be fixed soon (certainly before the new OS is going to be released).

Do you have any details about those other problems? Might be informative…

Thnx.

Well it’s not that bad if Web Shield is the only thing causing troubles. Especially if it’s limited to IE7 only. Standard Shield is working ok right?

I think it’s not limited to IE 7.
Standard Shield seems to be working mostly OK - with a little exception of DOS files (they may crash, instead of starting).
There’s also a little problem with Boot-time scanner (the archive scanning may be limited, or something like that - I’m not sure since the problem was already fixed in the internal builds, so I didn’t explore the implications very thoroughly).
