Problems with Avast! Home and OE6

My friend has a PC with Windows ME :-\ . I installed Avast! Home for him, set it up to check all the email. Everything is OK. But in a few days’ time, the email didn’t work anymore.

I set up everything again the same way it was before. All was OK, sun was shining etc. But in a few days again, the same error.

When I try to get email from the server, OE6 shows its error window, with the POP3 and SMTP server names and the user name, in the way that Avast! uses, like:

POP3: 127.0.0.1
SMTP: 127.0.0.1
username: mail.kolumbus.fi#ab1234

and then it says that the password is incorrect. It doesn’t accept any password, however.

If I change the POP3-, SMTP- and user name information to what they use to be, without avast!, like:

POP3: mail.kolumbus.fi
SMTP: smtp.kolumbus.fi
user name: ab1234

everything is OK. But after a while avast! will change it to its normal way and OE6 will ask for a correct password again and again and will not accept anything.

What should I do. I have installed avast! on my own computers and on several of my friends’ computers and everywhere else it has always worked!

Please help me. Jari Tuomi

Won’t it work if you follow?

  1. Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
  2. If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
  3. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
  4. Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
(even the ones created in the future).

I thought this was the default! I will try this as soon as I see my friend’s computer next time. Thank you.

Hi,

Try change the username to ab1234#mail.kolumbus.fi

Cheers,
