Problems with Avast offline installer

Hi,

I just downloaded the Avast Free Antivirus offline installer yesterday to use on a desktop machine running 32-bit Windows XP with no Internet. The machine already had an old version of Avast (10.3.2225, VPS 150728-0) previously installed but since it didn’t seem to be catching viruses on flash drives anymore, I figured it’s time to update.

I launched the installer but just after 10 seconds or so, the installation program terminated with an error, see the log attached. It seems that although this is the offline installer, it’s trying to download updates from a server, which it obviously can’t access, and that makes the installation fail. Am I missing something or is there a command-line option with which I could disable updates? I’m sure the computer itself is infected with something, since flash drives that I plug in get infected with a 20MB file which Avast on another computer recognizes as Win32:Trojan-gen, i.e. some unidentified trojan. Of course it could be this virus that’s causing the installation to fail but I’m not sure how to get rid of it, since I’m not able to install Avast. Any ideas?

With XP you need to be online to install avast no matter if you use the on-line or off-line installer.

Dev-Info: Offline installation is officially no longer supported on Vista and XP because new CEF (only one boundled in offline installer because of size) is not supported there and the online installer will download the correct CEF version.

Thanks for the replies. So there is no way I can manually download the right CEF? The computer doesn’t have a Wifi adapter and even wired Ethernet doesn’t seem to be working because there is no driver available for the current OS. I could possibly upgrade the OS to something else but that’s of course a bigger hassle.

No driver for XP ?
What NIC do you have in that system ?
Would not surprise me if it has the RTL8129 chip.

XP tells me PCI\VEN_8086 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10ED, which I take to be Intel 82599. According to the specs I found on the Intel website, XPSP3 is not supported, and I can’t find a suitable driver there, either.

No offline installation for XP? Dang! My friend has XP SP3 installed, and for some reason, it won’t connect to the internet. That means, I have to use another antivirus on that PC :(.

I can reinstall Windows XP, but with the kind of software he has installed, that is not an option right now.

On the other hand , as and as long as it is not connected to the internet , an old avast version (with offline ability) can do the job

I have the same problem, can’t re-register avast, so I was told to update program, which doesn’t work either. Which previous version will work with XPSP3?

The latest version will work with XP SP3 if the CPU can handle the SSE2 instruction set and the system is connected to the Internet.

avast doesn’t supply older versions.
You will have to search for it yourself and of course no warrentee that it will be a legitimate versions with all the risks that it includes.

Why not just connect the system to the Internet, download and install avast ?
After that you can download the VPS and install it manually if you decide to use the system off-line only.

Thanks, I installed this driver, got connected to the Internet and was able to install Avast. Just out of curiosity, how did you figure out that PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10ED refers to 82545 and not 82599? The latter is what I found with Google and for that one, Intel’s specs say XP is not supported.

Just a “bit” of experience (32+ years with computers) and knowledge I have.
So I went to the Intel website and search their driver database for it.

Intel website > support by product > network and I/O would also have taken you there.

I’m spending far too much time and hassle to drag computers to the store to download avast everytime it expires or needs updated. Hate to say it but I think its time to shop around. Thanks voor your time.

There is something called “learning” and yes when it comes to computers it will take (a lot of your) time.
But if you do spend the time on it, you don’t have to go to a store to get things done and can save (or is it safe? I keep mixing them up) you a lot of money.
It is also better for your back

I advice against just updating as avast doesn’t seem to be able to release updates without problems.
I would go for a clean installation each time there is new version.
