The key part of that question was “if so what was it” as many are very poor at cleaning up after them and this can cause a lot of grief with subsequent AV installations.
So what was your previous AV and we might be able to offer some advice on how to ensure it is completely removed ?
OK, but I’m still confused, by the have you had another AV we are talking of another AV other than avast on this computer ?
So if only avast, I would suggest a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
i’ve been out without connection for 3 months, and now neither the program update and virus database update will load by clicking on the icon.
The old version of avast I had when automatically run keep saying I’ve got virus on my laptop.
I try to unistall the old version from control panel but again nothing appens by clicking on the icon.
What do you suggest me to do?
Thanks
Then follow the clean reinstall instructions above.
Having downloaded the relevant applications you would probably have to start with step 2 as you can’t use add remove programs, e.g. run the uninstall utility from safe mode. Booting into safe mode http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml.
