Hello,
I’m a french man and excuse me for my bad english.
I’ll write you because I have some problems with avast update since a few days.
When the software is in update, I had the red screen and it says that it can’t update and when I open the little window the reason is “the software can’t choose a server to download the update”
So if you have any idea to resolve my problem please answer me thanks.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
Can you check the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file it may be corrupt or showing as 0KB in size, mine is 8KB and has 52 servers listed. If it is 0KB, delete it and try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
So my firewall is my xp firewall
The avast setup is not allowed in xp firewall but i use avast since 6 months and i had no problem before and i had’nt do any update of windows.
The server def is here but i can’t do repair because the add remove screen of avast didn’t come when i click!!
so i resolve my problem i find a way to unsintal my log and i reinstal and it works
Thanks for your help guys and have a nive day
Glad we could help, welcome to the forums.
I suggest that you install a firewall that provides full outbound protection (which XP’s firewall doesn’t). Zone Alarm free is much better than XP’s firewall http://www.zonelabs.com works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface. There are others, Comodo, Jetico, Sunbelt Kerio, etc.
See some firewall tests for comparison, some are freeware but many are paid for versions http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php.
