Hi,
i have activated Webshield even for Firefox, inserting all the instructions into proxy connection settings (localhost, port 12080).
There’s a problem: after a XX mins, the connection flops and firefox can’t communicate with the connection due to proxy settings.
I have win98 as OS…so what’s the problem?
No firewall (port already opened on the router), settings taken from the video into the ‘FAQ’ section, everything it’s ok…usually, Firefox works with proxy settings for Avast, but after some minutes firefox can’t dialog with the connection…help!
No help?
Sorry, I guess they are like me, they can’t work out why things are intermittent. If you got the proxy settings right (which it looks like) then it should work, not work for a little time and then quit.
So it is a mystery to me.
Hi coldpatrix
There's a problem: after a XX mins, the connection flops and firefox can't communicate with the connection due to proxy settings. All I could suggest is you look at all your settings , Internet Options , Network connections , and any further Internet configurations you can find , see if anywhere there's a setting to disconnect after a certain period of time enabled . Tedious , but in general if you have connectivity to the Web and it drops out it's maybe somethig to do with an Internet setting . Have you looked at LAN settings ? Annoying I know , and a mystery , as DavidR said , but must be a reason you would think . Does IE work without dropping out after XX mins ? Sorry can't think of any more obvious reasons . Contact your ISP if you feel it may be a service problem .
So…i have putted all the suggested settings in the box of lan configuration about proxy server (localhost, 12080 port) and there’s no limit of band or timeout limit of the connection. When the connection drops, drops for ALL the application opened that are using the web (except Messenger, even if there’s the opportunity to configure Avast Webshiled for that application).
I don’t know if in Win98 Webshield can use proxy server (in FAQ section there’s the indication ‘no trasparent proxy’ but i don’t know what it means). So, i have 6 providers but in reality i’m forced to use only one of them (no Webshield, no IM protection, no Email Protection - but i have no providers for that…), only Resident protection.
I’ve tried to substitute ‘localhost’ with ‘127.0.0.1’ and to take a deep look to the parameters of avast4.ini file but nothing was wrong.
Anyway, i use Firefox and not IE, but when the connection drops on Firefox, i try to surf the web with IE but proxy settings give problems even with IE. In other words, after 10 mins (more or less) of Webshield activity, the connection drops only for web browsers, but continues to work for other applications (e.g. Emule, Bitlord, Messenger and so on)…
Is it so strange for me or is it a real problem of Avast with Win98 system?

I could be wrong but this seems to be a problem with the setting in the browsers. If it were Webshield, you would also loose Emule, Bitlord, Messager, etc.
Avast works well with W98. Oldman still uses it and I use to use avast with W98SE.
coldpatrix when did this problem start ? Can you remember changing anything prior to the drop outs started occuring , i.e. Installing a program , …
(in FAQ section there's the indication 'no trasparent proxy' but i don't know what it means).Under Win98/ME you must configure your Web browser as if the transparent proxying is turned off. This is because the WebShield transparent proxy is not supported under this operating system. How do I manually configure the WebShield HTTP proxy running under Windows 95/98/ME Can you do a on demand scan ? ; you've few P2P proggies it seems ;
(e.g. Emule, Bitlord, Messenger and so on)...maybe you've got an infection , or they are configured in some way which is affecting your connection .
Go through the WebShield FAQ and see you 've made the correct configuration settings for Firefox and Internet Options (IE) .
I have followed all the right instructions!
No problems with the others applications or with the total connection, only the browsers don’t work…
The problem started when i decided to configure Webshield for Win98 (as soon as i realized that Webshield didn’t work and it remaines to 0 checked files and 0 infected files. It was still, so i decided to start Webshield protection according to FAQ rules)…
But…what’s transparent proxy?
P.S. Oldman and CharleyO, please make some screenshots of Lan configurations for Webshield and for the browsers you’re using to.
Maybe if you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and its Privacy Control set to High, you could have trouble. You have to manually configure browser to access Internet using avast! WebShield if you have Windows 98\Me. For 2k\XP\Vista it’s automatica and transparent.
To manually configure your browser see the following tutorials:
For IE and permanent connection users:
http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/ws_ieproxy.htm
For IE and dial-up users:
http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/ws_ieproxy_dialup.htm
For Firefox users:
http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/ws_ffproxy.htm
Means internal, local proxy, that is automatic, transparent for the user, no need to change any configuration.
