Outlook Express won’t allow the sending of .jpegs; when there is a picture attached, and I attempt to send the email, the sending progress par will go about 4/5’s of the way, and then simply stop. When this happens, I lose my internet connection to both the computers on my router. Once I re-establish my connection, I have to delete the email from the outbox folder, or else Outlook attempts to send it again, causing the same problem to loop over and over.
On one of my eBay listings, I wanted to revise the pictures. I attempted to upload a picture from my desktop to the listing, and there was some sort of timeout warning. The pictures would not upload, and I lost my internet connection on both computers again, causing me to restart the router once again.
I didn’t have these problems before I installed avast. Before I started with avast, I was using AVG, and that did not cause problems of any sort. Not sure if it’s some sort of compatibility issue with avast in conjunction with Win98, or possibly an issue with Outlook Express. Any help would be vastly appreciated.
First, turn off automatic sending of mail in ouitbox in Outlook Express to break the cycle.
I’ve changed a few 98SE PCs from AVG 7.5 to avast! in the last few weeks. No problems have been reported but I can’t honestly say whether anyone has tried to upload or send a .jpg attachment via OE.
When you uninstalled AVG were there any errors reported? Did you use the latest AVG installation package (recommended) or Add/Remove Programs?
With 98SE, both AVG and avast! change the port and IP settings in OE in order to scan incoming and outgoing mail. I don’t know why this would only affect .jpgs (it could be all large messages) but any “leftover” settings could be causing conflict.
Have you tried pausing or disabling any of the avast! providers to see if it makes a difference?
This I believe has nothing to do with avast, other than avast scans it and then hands it off to be send,it is at that time that OE gets involved (that would account for the delay you mention).
In outlook express, Tools, Options, Security, uncheck the option arrowed in the image (Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus). This is Microsoft’s draconian measure to supposedly protect you when all it does is be a pain in the rear. Contrary to what it says about this being related to receipt of emails it also applies to sending them.
