Problems with MSN Messenger 7.0

On a managed client running
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 with all the latest patches
Avast Managed Client v 4.6.440
VPS File 0549-3
and MSN Messsenger 7.0.0816

Logged into the machine with a regular domain user I am unable to login to the MSN Messenger. It times out and states there is a connection problem. If I turn off the IM provider on the avast client it connects fine. If I log in to the machine with a priveleged account there is no problem the avast im provider and msn messenger play fine. Help?

No firewall installed on the client machine.

I did a search on the forum read about twenty or so messages, followed recommendations of reinstalling the messenger a bunch of times, ensuring no proxy settings exist, and still no luck.

Hi again, how’s it going??

Is this something new in the latest version of the managed client? I.e. had it worked before issuing the update?

Sounds pretty strange to me… especially knowing HOW the IM provider works. It basically just monitors the MSN Messenger’s download folder for changes, that’s all (it doesn’t mess with the network communication in any way).

Thanks
Vlk

Hi Vlk,

It’s going well thanks. How’s life with you? I notice you changed your icon picture from skiing to baby carrying. Congratulations. Still loving Avast, I was talking with my manager the other day and commented that this is the best product we’ve ever bought here. Great product, and outstanding support a very rare combination to find in today’s market. But anyway to the problem. MSN Messenger was working in the old client and then about two weeks ago quit working. The user complained to me only yesterday which is after the new client was installed via automatic update. So something about two weeks ago broke the ability of Avast and Messenger to play nicely. I’m going back through patches applied to see if there is something related in that respect but was hoping maybe you might have an idea or two.

 I’m glad it’s working OK for you. Many new features are coming up btw…

Unfortunately, I’ve never heard about this issue before. Which is strange particularly considering that the IM provider is identical in the netclient and home editions, and that no home user has complained about this so far (we really have lots of them – I mean lots :)).

Are you really sure the problem disappears iff the avast IM shield is stopped?

Thanks
Vlk

I am 100% certain that unchecking the MSN Messenger box in the IM provider lets messenger run because I defined a policy just for that one machine configured like that after I determined that was the issue. Mind you an administrator account doesn’t have a problem running messenger on this machine irregardless of the Messenger option being checked or not. It only affects a regular user trying to run messenger.
