I’m using aVast 4.7 Home and since the recent automatic update of the program the OE started to freeze frequently. I’ve stopped the avast email provider and OE works again OK. Is there a way to solve the problem so that I can use again avast 4.7 to screen the OE mail?
We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version (4.7.1001) and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.
PC=p4 OS=Win xp se en sp2 updated automatically
Avast Home version=4.7.1001 – " – with no other antivirus
VPS updated automatically (today is 10/05/2007)
Ad Aware & Spybot are used from time to time
I didn’t have error events except the message which appears while I close the freezed OE with ALT+CTRL+DLT.
By the way, I must conffes that now I noticed that although I disabled Avast Mail provider the freezing problem reappeared again but with longer intervals. ??? ??? ???
Can you explain to us a little bit more of what “freeze” means here. I think we can guess but maybe you can explain a little more … you cannot open an email … you cannot compose and email?
It is difficult to understand how avast could be “freezing” OE. avast does not know that you are using OE, or Eudora or Thunderbird or Incredimail … avast knows nothing about email programs. All avast knows is that some program is going out to port 110 of an email server to get mail or to port 25 of a email server to send mail. so avast is only involved when mail is actually being received or is actually being sent … when it scans the message flow. At any other time avast has no idea that you are using an email program.
Freeze means that nothing can be done with any of the OE operations and it is impossible to close it without the use of ALT+CTL+DEL.
Anyhow, I’ve decided to RESTORE the system to one week earlier and right now the OE recovered and works OK.
To be honest, now I’m not 100% sure that the cause of the OE problem was the update of Avast (or some other update). I’ll follow up the mattrer and will let you know if something starts to go wrong.
Thanks for your consideration,
Aveitan
Ok and thanks for the update. Please let us know how it works out.
