Problems with POP3 OnAccess Scanner since 4.7.1029

Hello all,

since updating to 4.7.1029, access to all of my pop3 accounts was no longer possible.
I noticed when fetching pop mails led to error messages, until I deactivated online pop3
scans.

It is NOT related to a firewall issue - the problem also occurs with an inactive firewall.
I also tried both network connectors - same effect.

The problem disappears when I disable scans for incoming pop3 mail (and outgoing - SMTP
fails as well) in the Internet Mail Provider setup dialogue - but no scans any more…

While I usually use Thunderbird, I tried Outlook Express to get a better error message.

As the online email scan (to me) is one of the outstanding avast! features, I feel
quite sad that I had to disable it…

If you remove ashMaiSv.exe from the allowed applications to connect the Internet and try to get email again, will your firewall ask for permission? Will it work, i.e., you can receive mail?

You got me - disabling the firewall obviously only disabled the network checks! After your proposal, I checked the blocked applications - and hey! ashMaiSv.exe was blocked! While I don't know how this happened, this (of course) was cause to the troubles. Problem resolved - thank you!

Yes, this is correct (xx and yy are - of course - placeholders to hide some of the more private data).

I have the same problem with POP3 access.
It seems only to disable function of POP income mail scan then mail through POP3 could be downloaded.
I also found the Thunderbird and Outlook Express have the same problem.

Error Message from Outlook Express:
Server: ‘ms11.url.com.tw’, protocol: POP3, server response: ‘-ERR concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded(pass:20, processes:emproxy.exe[19], msimn.exe[1]), there is a collision with another program’, port: 110, Error : 0x800CCC90, Error Code: 0x800CCC90

You haven’t got the same problem, this problem related to the firewall blocking ashMaiSv.exe.

Your problem stems from your emproxy.exe using [19] of the concurrent connection limit, add msimn [1] once ashMaiSv.exe tries to connect it breaks the concurrent connections limit. The collision is with emproxy.exe

A forum search for concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded returns many hits, this is just one.

You can edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini file, [MailScanner] section and increase the MaxConnections value. You may have to create the line for the MaxConnections value if it isn’t there.

MaxConnections=20

The default concurrent connection limit is 20 (for mail & news together). If the limit was exceeded, you would see the line Closing connection due to MaxConnections into aswMaiSv.log file. This limit exists not to save resources, but to prevent connection looping in strange configurations, so the user can increase it without worry to, for instance, 50. The value 0 disables the limit.

However, emproxy is a process associated with McAfee Email Proxy, so you would appear to have remnants of McAfee on your system or still installed.
Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
