Problems with Professional Edition 2

After using the free version of avast! successfully for some time, I made the mistake today of purchasing the Professional Edition. Now I have no protection on my computer at all. The free version is corrupted and the professional edition will not download successfully.

I followed the instructions and restarted the computer. No Professional Edition and no free version that works.

Am I in the right place to get some help? Many thanks if so.

You should only have needed to enter the Pro license key into the Home version whilst on-line and it would have been converted.

How and where are you trying to download the Pro version from ?
Did you use a download manager and or did you try to download an install in one operation ?

If the pro version didn’t download properly you wouldn’t have been able to install it so how did the home version become corrupt ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may have to do a clean reinstall if that doesn’t at least get you back to the home version.
Download the latest pro version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Thank you very much for your help.

I managed to uninstall the corrupted home edition (free version) of avast! and have now successfully downloaded the 4.8 Professional version. I think the mistake I made was asking it initially to Run instead of saving it to the desktop and then installing from there.

I am still worried that the icon in the system tray shows the little red circle. When I click on it however it doesn’t show an error message but comes with with Resident Menu. This shows that it is inactive. Is this correct?

Also, on the simple interface, I keep changing the Resident Status from “Disabled” to “Standard” and yet every time I open it again it has gone back to “Disabled”.

I am not usually such a dunce but I would appreciate some help as I’m currently scratching my head to get round the last little hiccup in the installation!

Many thanks.

No. Your antivirus is not working.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

In the last 24 hours I’ve tried to successfully download and install avast! for mac that I bought, but nothing seems to work. It seems to be installing the software but it doesn’t, and there’s nothing to open, that is no “About avast!” page or place to log in the license key. We tried a trial download first from Apple, and it did a trial run, but that can’t be deleted for some reason. Is suspect that this version is corrupted, but don’t know how to get the un-corrupted software. ??? ???

I suggest you post this in the avast! 4 for Linux/Unix/Mac specific forum, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=5.0.

Tech, I did as you said and redownloaded avast! I now have the blue icon in the system tray - no red circle this time, and resident protection operating.

I would like to express my thanks for your help (and to David R).

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
