I have downloaded and installed Avast! 4 on my PC
but are experiencing the following problem:
Am unable to download updates. The servers cannot
be contacted.
As I doubt if this is due to a firewall problem I it could
be that the HTTP Proxy setting has to be asdjusted.
Please note the following:
I use Outpost Firewall 1.0. Avast.setup is a trusted
application on this
I also use Firefox 2.0. The reason why I am unable
to upgrade this is because I still have to use Win98SE
on this computer. This is not suitable for the new
version of Firefox
I have viewed the video tutorial on the Avast! support
website on how to set-up the HTTP Proxy on Firefox
but this did not help me, probably because I use the
2.0 version of FF.
Kindly favour me with your expert advice on how to resolve
the problem of updating.
When I tried the updates again our local time and the date was correctly shown
as 09.32(GMT + 2.00) and 28th April 2009.
I have tried to download the updates by briefly turning off the firewall but this did not help. The problem persists.
The Avast! error message suggests that, amongst others, the problem could possibly
be that the HTTP proxy settings are incorrect. As I mentioned before I am unable to
check this because the version of Firefox that I use seem different from the one used
in the example in your video. Please guide me on how to check if my settings are
correct.
The inability to download the updates are a major problem to me and I would sincerely
appreciate your expert assistance to resolve this issue.
Do you (or did you have) another av installed?
What other security (related) software do you have installed?
How and with what do you connect to the net?
But I had AVG before Avast and I had the same problem there. AVG didn’t want to update anymore, and I had problems before with it, so I thought AVG was to blame. Throw it away, got me Avast 4.8 and again: no updates! ???
There must be something with my connection, but surfing and downloading is no problem, also all other programs (Firefox, Ad-Aware, etc.) keep updating. Only the antivirus doesn’t want to. Could it be a Virus? :-\ Sure hope not.
Can anybody help us out please? I don’t want my family photo’s eaten by a Blork
Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.
I look some more on other fora for a solution and I think I found it. Like I said, I had the problem with AVG too, so it had to be a problem of my pc, not of Avast.
I’ve downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and installed it. It couldn’t update either, so I ran a scan without updating. It found another 8 malwares. I had them removed, then you have to reboot to complete the deletion of the malware. And then my Avast could update
Hello guys…!
I’m from Ecuador and my problem is that my license has expired. What shall i do to solve the problem…
Help me… ???
can you write to me to my mail
Hi Zyj,
please remove your email address as this is not necessary and can lead to you being targeted for spam etc.
This should really be in it’s own topic as it is unrelated to the original topic.
But…
You can re-register at: https://secure.avast.com/web/eng/home-registration.php
Avast needs to know what the proxy information is, so that it can access the internet to download updates. Firefox shouldn’t have anything to do with this.
So, do you need to use a proxy to access the internet? Usually, home users do not have a proxy, it’s just a direct connection to the internet. If you do have a proxy, do you know what the IP address:port is or the address is?
Have you had previous versions of avast or another Anti-virus program installed on the computer prior to installing avast?
Have you checked your computer with malwarebytes to see if there are other problems with your computer that could be preventing avast from accessing the internet?
How do you access the internet? Is it dialup, dsl, cable, satellite, FIOS, etc.?
Well, it’s because the OP opened another thread complaining about Avast not having good support, and the fact that no one helped him on his question. I looked up his original thread (figuring that it was this one since he only had 4 posts) so that I could help out.
