Problems with vista

Hi

Need some help. tried searching for some answers but they didn’t solve my issue

I’ve been a user of the home edition from some time now but only on xp machines

got a new laptop today with Vista Home Premium, and wanted to start by installing Avast.

picked up the file i had (last version build 4.7.942)… i think this was my first mistake not downloading a newer one…
anyway—
It installed fine.

First I tried updating with no luck

  • On the Avast Main program I tried the update button and no dialog comes up. However, either by the button or menu after multiple tries it’s reading database version: 080909-0, 09-09
Tried updating the program but also no dialog window…

Then I noticed Windows Security Center says is desactivated.
when i try to activate Avast gives me the error: “Avast: Unknown Error. Program cannot activate resident part (Provider start failed)”.

On services i can see 4 services running: Antivirus and iAVS4 automatic, mail and web manual.

decided to uninstall and download the latest version and … more trouble.
While trying to uninstall i got error (translated from portuguese): RunDLL- Error Loading - Impossible to locate specified module. and it won’t uninstal

Final try was installing the new version on top of the old one. downloaded already from 2 different locations and same error:
"Setup Selfextract
An error 3 ( 0000003) has occurred. Last performed operation was: spawning

All This done with admin rights

Maybe i am just being unlucky
can i get some hhelp please?

thanks
Luís

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Also, is there any other antivirus preinstalled (OEM) in this machine?
