Problems with WMP, Yahoo Messenger, Search and System restore after install

Hi all!
I’ve been searching the forums and haven’t been able to find anything already posted that is similar that might have already been answered, so posting this in the hopes someone can help me.

I’m running WinXP Pro and was running Nortons as a virus scanner, but a friend suggested Avast would be much better. So as my nortons had just ran out, I switched over and installed Avast today and sure enough, there were a few things it found on initial boot scan, including affected kernal32.dll, winsock.dll and wsock32.dll. In the chest I refreshed these and it said these 3 system files were clean after all.
Loading up the rest of my system, I notice that now Windows Media Player will not open. Its now just a pretty button for clicking when I have nothing better to do. Music files opened through Windows Explorer will not launch it either.

Next, Yahoo Messenger will open and run, but if I open an IM window, it throws up a message saying about active x in that window and do I want to allow the scripts to run? Regardles of saying yes or no at this point, I can’t see anything typed in the IM window. Messages I type go through, but I can’t see them in mine. I cannot receive any messages sent to me. Calling function still works however.

I thought perhaps I’d done something wrong during the install, as I have Zone Alarm and it threw up a bunch of errors during installation. So I tried a System Restore. Well, that’s out now too, I have to open it 3 times before it will respond, and then all I get is an empty white window. The same with searching for files on my computer. I get the puppy in the blue sidebar, and empty whiteness, but not a single search box or button. Even leaving these open and waiting 10 mins does nothing.

So last effort, I uninstall Avast. Doesn’t change a single thing. All the problems remain, no WMP, no Yahoo Messenger, no Search function and no System Restore. Hate to think there could be more I haven’t found yet.

Just as an added bonus, I reinstalled Avast and set it to complete upgrade in case it was an old bug. I also disabled the monitoring on IM Programs and neither helped. I’m at a loss, and any help would be appreciated.

Oh, and let’s add AIM to that list too! All I get when I try to start it is a flash on the side of my screen then its gone again. sigh

To start with, Norton needs a thorough removal. And at this point, it would be wise to thoroughly remove all AV vestiges, and start anew with a fresh install of Avast. If you haven’t kept the Avast install file somewhere, re-download it, save it to a folder or your desktop.
Download the Norton removal tool. http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Download the Avast Uninstall utility. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
Download the Avira Removal utility. Doesn’t matter that you may never have had Avira, some of the good malware fighters on this forum recommend it foir cleaning up all sorts of “orphaned” entries. http://original.avira.com/en/products/AVIRA_Removal_Tool_for_Windows.html
Go offline. Completely uninstall Avast from the control panel. Run the Avast uninstall utility.
If any Norton/Symantec security products remain in the control panel>add/remove programs, uninstall them. Run the Norton removal tool.
Run the Avira uninstall utility.
During this process, reboot whenever prompted, and at least once following the procedure. (Just to be sure.)
Install Avast from wherever you saved the installer file before, go through the setup procedure, go online and get updates for Avast. If you still have problems going online, this is likely to be a firewall issue. Check that the appropriate permissions are granted for Avast in ZoneAlarm. Update Avast. You might want to do a scan at this point, if malware is still suspected.
Post back. There’s a few more things we can do if some of the computer functions are still not right.

Tarq57, you’re an absolute legend!! Thankyou so much!! That was exactly what it needed and all is working perfectly now. Amazing! Thanks again

Superb! You’re welcome. Glad all is good.
