Product configuration error

I have just downloaded the Avast Home Edition. When I click on the setupeng.exe file I get the Avast!Installation screen. On this screen is an opportunity to update. If you cloick on it nothing happens. If you click “next” the following error appears “There was an error while changing the product configuration”. This is as far as I can get. Any ideas as to the problem. It appears that the file won’t execute to even install Avast in the first place…
Thanks in advance.

Sorry to make you wait so long…
From which version are you updating?
Does the original installation was in English language too?

I had a few months ago a trial version. A few days ago I uninstalled it since it had run out (not sure what version it was). Then last night I downloaded the Home edition for personal use. Since I got the error noted previously I downloaded Home Edition again this morning thinking the first file may have corrupted during the download. However that wasn’t the case the same problem appeared again. So here is what happens when the download finishes I get a “setupeng.exe” file. When I click it I expected Avast to go through an installation process. However when clicked the AVAST!Installation screen appears. From there nothing will happen except that once the “next” button is actioned I get the above mentioned error. The previous version was english. I also recently uninstalled AVG antivirus.

TT,

I think a few things are going on here. You apparently first downloaded the PRO version trial. Did you register and get a code number? This would be the first problem. If you entered this key into the Home version, it will try to configure the setup for PRO.

Secondly, it does not seem that the first installation of Avast was completely removed and some files left behind are causing a conflict with the new installation. You can download the Avast Uninstall utility here: http://www.avast.com/eng/programs

Lastly, how did you remove AVG? Did you use their unintall utility or did you use Windows Add/Remove? Here again…If all the AVG files were not removed, especially those that were used by the AVG resident scanner, you will have conflict when you try to install Avast.

Ok…

  1. Uninstall the Home version again using the Avast Uninstall Utility.
  2. Reboot computer
  3. Download this Registry Cleaner: Reg. Clean and install it. http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm It’s a very simple program but quite good.
Then, run Reg. Cleaner and look in the list for any occurrence of AVG or Grisoft (Vendor). Remove those registry entries.
  4. Shutdown all programs running except Systray and Explorer (Hold Ctl. and Alt. keys down then press Delete key to bring up the Dialog box.)
  5. Install Avast again.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks I will try your suggestions. I am not sure which version was originally downloaded. This was done by a friend. I will let you know soon on my progress. I am not at my desktop currently so I can’t try your suggestions right away.

Thanks Techie101. I followed your direction and now have a working Avast.

Thanks again.
