Program Disappeared

I just went to update the virus database and noticed there was no icon.
the program folder is in place, but it shows no files. when I click on the folder it then says access denied. Win XP SP2 - security center says Avast protection is on. The Start menu shortcut cannot find the exe. file. Add/Remove programs shows 119MB and last used last may-2005. here is the hyjackthis result. I will post the rest of the report as disappeared 2.

Try using the avast! removal tool then download and install avast! again.

As a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers.

Do you have any security based programs that could monitor and block start-up entries, adaware, spybot S&D, etc.

With the access denied comment, I would guess that you aren’t using the latest version of avast, 4.7.827 ?
What does Task Manager show in the Processes Tab for avast, they begin with ash or asw ?

I do use Spybot and add aware. I can’t say for sure what version avast was but I installed it a couple years ago, but also use the update program and database links. Task manager did not show avast, although in security center it said the computer was protected by avast. I don’t know if I can find out anything else now, I used the removal tool and reinstales.

Right click the avast icon after you run the shortcut for the ashDisp.exe file I mentioned above. Check the about avast it will tell you what version you are using.

If you have either AdWatch (in adaware) or TeaTimer (in Spybot S&D) enabled, check and see if they haven’t blocked ashDisp.exe, if so restore it, then disable them and reboot. This may allow the avast icon to appear, if not you will probably have to re-install - uninstall avast, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

I used the removal tool and reinstales.
After this the problems occurred or has this resolved the problem ?

 Hi Cash29 :

Those "about : blank " listings in your "R1" & "R0" items in
the HijackThis log you posted in the other thread MAY
show a spyware problem. Since you mentioned Ad-Aware,
you may want to ask their Experts on the forums at
  www.landzdown.com !?
