I open my program to do a virus scan but the program is freezing up >:(. What can I do to fix the problem ???

What exact version of Avast?
What OS?
Any error(s) in Avast log file?
Any error(s) in the Windows log file?
Already tried a repair?

I don’t get any error message
When I open the program to start a virus scan it opens but I go to select a scan area and choose but when I try to add another scan to do at the same time the program is frozen and I cannot choose to scan anything else nor can I start a scan. It acts like it is frozen. I can’t click out of it or scan. I just ctrl alt del and end program.

This is not possible with Home version.
You need Professional version to run simultaneous tasks.
Well even if I only want to do one scan it wont let me. Something is wrong with the program. I can only choose a scan and that is as far as I get. It wont let me do anything else. Can not run a scan at all. Can someone help Please?

Did you had another av installed? If so which one?
If you still have another installed. Which one?
Have you tried a repair of Avast?
If you right click a file and choose scan, does that work?

I went to add and remove programs and did a repair. I did not help. I can right click a file and scan. It’s when I try to do a system scan. I can choose scan local drives but that is as far as it will let me go. I try to add to scan my external hard drive also but can’t and can not start the scan. I don’t have any other virus programs on my PC and only one version of Avast.

Did you had another av on the system? If so, which one.
Also please check:
start > run > service.msc
There should be 4 entries with Avast in it’s name.
Do you have them and if so, are they running or not?
Do NOT touch or change them! Just tell us.
What exactly do you do? Can you describe it, please, click by click?
