I just downloaded Avast 4 Home and i’m trying to make it use my proxy settings, but when i goto [Program Settings] - [Update (Basic)] - [Details…], nothing happens and the program stops responding.
I have entered the registration code already.
I’m on WinXP Professional.
I’m behind a proxy server.
Please help me.

Try a repair of Avast.
This is by design: you can’t change proxy (or any other update) settings while an update is being performed.
You should terminate the process avast.setup and open that proxy settings dialog again.
I think you do not need to repair avast 
Had the same problem. avast froze as soon as I clicked the ‘details…’ button. I made sure avast wasn’t running (no icons in the system tray), then went to the settings and details using the desktop-icon. Then copied the settings from the LAN-settings/proxy under the Connections-tab from the IE-settings menu.

Did you use the registration key?
In fact, I’m not talking about the icons but about avast.setup process: ctrl-alt-del and see if it’s there.
Which firewall are you using? Does it enable avast! to connect and update?
Which are your avast update settings on the ‘Connections’ tab?
