Weird thing happened tonight. I was on the internet and all 5 services were running but then, a few hours later I noticed that two of the services were not running. (I think Internet Mail and Web Shield). So I got off the internet and rebooted but then Avast was totally disabled. I clicked it to try to start the program and a window came up with a link to a FAQ page which directed me to the Services that should be running in order for Avast to run. Most of these services were disabled. But I didn’t do it. Was wondering how it happened. ??? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Sorry, the repeated question, do you have any other antivirus installed in this computer?
Do you have any startup manager application (PrevX, ProcessGuard, etc.)? Do they block avast! to start?
Hey Tech,
Thanks for your response. No, I don’t have any other anti virus software and no start up mgr. Odd thing is that two of the Avast services were shut down while I was on the internet. Then, when I rebooted, all of them were shut down. Hummm.
Anyhoo…
Hello,
If you had ever installed some other anti virus applications on the computer, I recommend you to search a method of completely uninstalling them.
Some applications (not only antivirus) are not uninstalled completely via “add/remove program” of Windows.
Some vendors show another uninstalling method on their web.

PS
Sorry my strange English
I suppose you have to have four avast! services:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)
The three first (or I’ve recently read here that only the two first of them) should be Automatic loaded and the last (or the two last) Manually loaded.
Yeah I used to have Norton Anti Virus (Symantec). I uninstalled it before I installed Avast! I do think I got rid of it all. I searched for the folders that add-remove didn’t delete and also used a registry cleaner. I also stopped the “Network Driver” service they left behind. But I’ll take your suggestion and go to Symantec to see if they have a utility to completely remove it.
Thanks
P.S. Your English is great Iso-G. Besides, I’m from the Bronx. Everybody speaks strange English here, including the natives! ;D
I just searched for a web page to show me how to completely remove Norton and found this one in case anyone needs it.
http://www.cit.cornell.edu/helpdesk/win/nav/uninstallnav.html
It helped me find a place where Norton was hiding that I didn’t know about. Great. Thanks for the help. Hopefully that was it.

I’m so glad you found a solution about the problems.
Some MS-DOS applications had still remained their device drivers in the config.sys file after their uninstalling. Some applications haven’t been completely uninstalled since MS-DOS.
I think returning to the original state by uninstalling is very important to use a computer stably.
I want OS to completely control the application’s info.
