program update problem and slow dial-up - question

When there is an update to the program is the download actually an entire new program, as opposed to a small add-on?
I am asking because I have 28.8 dial-up (usually not that ‘fast’) and would never try to download the whole program here, but rather go through getting it on my laptop from the library next week then reinstalling, re-registering, getting the definitions again, etc. Yesterday, not realizing I might be making a big problem for myself, I clicked Update Program and it simply times out over and over - seemingly always at the same spot in …/setup_ais_443.vpx . (It is now doing the same with the definitions so I can’t even update them.) Will I have to do this to solve the problem?

thanks

Faster connection = problem solved

Use a download manager and download the entire program in pieces.

He is saying that he has problem that his built in upgrade downloader (which is avast product update perhaps) is downloading whole setup file again instead of getting just a small piece of vps or vpx file to make it a new version. [That’s what I could understand] ;D

I recommend you to use IOBit Advance System Care. In that there is an option to tweak your internet setting (search yourself as I don’t remember) and it will make your internet little faster…
Try it it worked for one of my friends

The avast program updater (to go from version 6.0.1 to 6.0.1091) retries over and over at what seems like the same place in the download/update process. (Running no other programs at the same time.)
When I installed avast 6 and tried to get the virus definitions I ran into the same problem - My husband found and downloaded the definition file - I discovered Zonealarm was causing problems and everything worked ok (automatic definition updates) until I tried to update the program. Now both the program update and the definiton update hang and retry. I have tried different times of day, etc.

I am using avast free on an xp system. A faster connection would be heaven, but isn’t available - this is what the phone line will do and no more.

thanks
