Programs in Win 8.1 Startup Folder Not Loading at Startup

I just switched over from Webroot SecureAnywhere to Avast.
I load Truecrypt and ARS Clips at startup and have shortcuts in my shell:startup folder in Win 8.1 Pro. However, neither program loads at startup.
I have white-listed the sub-dirs where the two programs are located in Avast > Settings > General > Exclusions.

Is Avast blocking the folder?

Did you remove Webroot completely before installing avast?

Thanks for your reply.
I did remove Webroot using Add/Remove Programs as directed. Just to be sure I ran their two cleanup programs which completed successfully.
The problem with the start menu still appears.

Where else can I look?

I don’t think avast is the problem, but let us check.

  • Disconnect from the net (for safety reasons).
  • Right click the avast symbol near the clock.
  • Shield control
  • Disable all shields permanently
  • Reboot

If the programs are not loading now, it is very likely not a problem with avast.
Ofcourse don’t forget to enable the shields again after the reboot.
