Provider Settings

I am new to Avast AV and just want to confirm if I have the OnAccessProtection set right.

I only use web based email (yahoo and gmail), I don’t do Instant Messaging, I don’t do P2P.

So I have terminated Outlook/Exchange, Internet Mail, Instant Messaging, and P2P Shield.

I have enabled the Network Shield, Standard Shield, and Web Shield.

Is this set right?

Sounds like you are doing fine.

As VikingBabe stated, It sounds good.

Like you, I also only use web based email.

I have Internet Mail provider active. The reason is that if you happen to get infected with a malware that sends out email from your computer, this provider will let you know that this is happening. Otherwise, it may be some time before you know this is happening … perhaps not until your ISP send you a warning that you are sending out too much email, that your are a spammer, and that you may loose your connection privileges. Running this provider uses very little resources and can save you much grief should such a malware gets on your computer.

yes, malware can send out email when they have their own email program built into the malware.

To Charlie O.:

Thanks so much for alerting me to this issue. So I should enable the Internet Mail Service of Avast, right–to prevent, malware sending out email.

I assume my other settings are ok.

Thanks for all the replies and help.

Yes, it is ok to leave the other 3 providers off if you are not using IM’s, Outlook, nor P2P. Just be sure to turn them on in the future if you decide to use such services.
