Proxy Network Settings for 98 S.E - Protocols etc

A few questions,

I have set the localhost 12080 for the proxy as I use 98, but do I check the box for use this proxy server for all protocols

Please see my Firefox settings image below, and let me know if everything looks right for my operating system 98 S.E

IMPORTANT

I use Firefox v2 as well as Internet Explorer 6, will this cause problems by using both with Avast and or it’s web sheild? I don’t appear to have anything against the SOCKS section for the I.E settings!

I have SOCKS v5 as being ticked, SOCKS v4 is unticked, I don’t think you can have these 2 both ticked together anyway, is it normal to have SOCKS v5 used instead of SOCKS v4

Here are my Internet Explorer Proxy Settings, please tell me if anything looks wrong here for use with Avast, please remember I use 98.

If you follow the tutorials in this post it makes clear that you should set up a proxy for http only whether it is IE or Firefox. avast does not scan the other protocols in the browser.

There is no problem about using the proxy in IE and Firefox - indeed you can quite happily be running both at the same time with avast scanning the http accesses of both of them.

I have that set up as per my images.

However my next question is on the Avast settings - UpDate connections, I have the box ticked for My Computer is permanently connected to the internet, when I click on the proxy button underneath for proxy server settings the Auto detect (use internet explorer settings) is ticked, the middle radio button.

So does it take the settings from whatever I have set up on I.E? or should I change the Avast setting and specify the localhost proxy server independantly from I.E, Or would I only need to do this if I didnt have the localhost set up on the I.E settings?

If you don’t use a proxy to connect to the internet (forget any avast requirements), your ISP would dictate if you needed to, otherwise it is best set it to ‘Direct connection (no proxy).’

Remember this is only for updates and it doesn’t use your browser to do that.

I am sure I was told that as I use windows 98 I then had to enter the localhost 12080 so that the web, and Email scanner would work on that system.

My ISP doesnt use a proxy, so if what you say is correct then I do not need to have any proxy details like localhost in any of my browser settings or Avast either.

You need the proxy setting in the browser to work with the web shield proxy, which has nothing to do with the avast update (Connection) proxy.

So what I said has nothing to do with using the settings in the browser they are totally separate and different, as I said “(forget any avast requirements)” the proxy setting in the Connections is only if you use one because your ISP said you had to (which isn’t the case). Just set it to Direct connection as that is the correct setting for your circumstances.

You’re welcome.
