Pulling my hair out with free ver 5, please help, install / update issue

Hi

I would really really appreciate some help here.

Ok I will give all my info, firstly the error is ‘illegal instruction (0xc000001d) occured in application at location 0x59aa128b’

I am running windows xp home edition ser pack 3.

I had norton 360 installed and have fully removed using both system and norton removal tool.

I had iobit security too, again fully uninstalled.

I did not d/l from cnet, I d/l home free version from avast site.

I tried re install after using avast removal tool in safe mode

I still get same message above when i try to update program or database.

I also get an error from windows during the install process, ‘fatal error and must close’ but the install continues and seems to complete ok.

Avast runs ok but wont update I get ‘illegal instruction (0xc000001d) occured in application at location 0x59aa128b’

I have tried various online scanners and as far as I know my pc is clean.

Any help much appreciated, MUCH!

Rgds

Is other security software running on your system?
Do you use firewall software?
asyn

Hi,

no nothing else running, windows firewall off… :frowning:

Which version did you use? Latest build is 5.0.507. Did you try this one?
You can download and run free Mbam: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Check your system if any malware is dedected.
asyn

I also would check with MalwareBytes, there is a free version.
And I’d turn the Windows firewall on immediately. It should’ve been on from the moment Norton360 was removed.
Avast free doesn’t have a firewall, but even if you were trying the suite, it’s recommended to leave the Windows firewall on.

Hi

I did try the malwarebytes program n it did find a trojan which was deleted and system restarted several times and scanned.

turned windows firewall back on.

I also have the latest 507 version ??? :frowning:

And the name of the trojan, and the full name and path where it was found, please?
This should be in the MBAM quarantine.

So is your system clean now? Is avast working again?
Please do as Tarq57 said and post more info…
asyn

sorry cant supply that info, file was found and i deleted it.

guess you cant help then?

you could post the latest saved scan rapport that is saved in the malwarebytes log.

Just to think outside the box, have you run a test on the system memory with something like memtest or PC-Check? It could be an issue with your RAM. Just a thought…

kind regards

Lesley

I try.
Seems the trojan blocked a proper installation of avast.
So if your system is clean now, try the following:

  1. Uninstall avast
  2. Run the uninstall utility in safe mode again
  3. Download and install the latest version
Please post back here if problem is solved…

this just tells me its clean which I thought and reported b4.

tried memory test ok.

uninstalled avast, uninstalled malware, even tried version 4.8, as someone said it was easier to do then install 5.0 over it.

Same thing.

if i take it all out is there a version better i should use?

also when I d/l the avast 5 version from avast website it diverts to cnet, but i heard cnet d/l can be problematic.

how can i d/l it without going via cnet?

maybe this is my problem

You don’t say if it is the Free or Pro version that you are after, so I will assume the free version. Try this direct link for the program and quick start documentation, Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe - Avast! Free antivirus Quick Start Guide http://files.avast.com/files/documentation/quick-start-guide-free-en-ww.pdf

Ron173, you mentioned in this post (above) that MBAM had found and deleted a trojan, then posted a clean MBAM scan report.
Either MBAM didn’t find and delete a trojan, or the posted scan report is not the one relating to the trojan.

(Also, by the way, you IE version is out of date.)

Did you use an admin account while installing?
You will need admin rights to install avast.
asyn

Hi all,

yes admin account.

cleaned the virus so didnt show in report.

I dont like internet explorer 8.

I gave up on avast and installed avira which found 4 trojans!!!

I uninstalled avira reinstalled avast… same.

re installed avira, found another trojan.

uninstalled avira, reboot etc.
now avast is in and ok!! phew!!!
