Pup.crossfire sa

(Apologies if this shows up twice, I am very fried from dealing with this computer…) here is my issue:

Computer has been slow, turns itself off, also the clock is off at times. A scan turned up pup.crossfire sa (Malwarebytes).

Yesterday I had Pagerage, which I removed along with Yontoo but then when I uninstalled Mozilla and reinstalled it using Internet Explorer, IE opened in some stealth mode, and the new Mozilla said that one of my most often visited pages is one I rarely visited.

So to sum, yesterday it was pagerage and all the weirdness of that, and today it is Pup.crossfire sa. So I’m wondering if something is lurking somewhere.

Thanks!

AdwCleaner
Malwarebytes
OTL
aswMBR

One of the Malware specialists will respond to you later as there in different time zones and are probably sleeping/working at the moment.

As you have already done the Malwarebytes scan you can probably leave that for the moment unless one of the malware guys wish for you to re-run it later.

Thanks, attached are the results. aswMBR.exe was blocked by Norton AV so I was unable to run it.

Btw, is it safe to send files to an external hard drive (mostly media) while waiting for this to be resolved? Thanks!

Hi you appear to have multiple AV’s please remove all bar the one you are using
Once done can you let me know what the problems are

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

Hi, I had RagePage which took over my browser for a while, I finally got rid of it and Yontoo, but then Pup.crossfire sa was detected. For months my computer has been turning itself off, not just restarting (which I assume is done by Microsoft updates?), and sometimes the computer clock will be off by minutes or hours compared to the internet. Mostly I ignored those problems but now I’m worried that there is a trojan or other nasty beastie lurking. I am getting a new laptop and want to move things from this desktop and the old laptop but don’t wish to transfer problems. Got enough of those…

You helped me with a worm years ago (scones, jam and cream debate) and I was both relieved and a tad embarrassed to find you here still helping us all (embarrassed because who wants to repeat their mistakes when there are plenty of new ones to be made :).

Ah yes I remember it well ;D Clotted cream and scones … Yum Yum. I am like a bad penny … Hard to get rid of

A few bits did not want to go first time around so I will hit them again
The time loss problem sounds as though it may be the CMOS battery getting a bit flat

I will check the MBR out, it may be OK but it will only take a few minutes

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Take two, the report is too long for the dialog box, and “cure” option was not available, so I attached it.
Bad pennies = good luck :).

OK they now look good … So what problems do we still have to work on ?

Yay!

Hmmm, problems to work on - gun control in the U.S.? World peace? Why does the toast always land jelly side down when it falls of the table? Seriously, you have now been promoted from bad penny to magic penny  and I fully appreciate your time.

Wrt the computer, I’m going to either upgrade to something with Windows 8 which I understand has fixed some security holes (like not defaulting to ‘guest’ being an administrator) or jump ship over to an Apple system, and I’ll attempt to be more vigilant in the future. Anything else in the meantime (like the slow clock, which sounds like you think is a hardware issue) it seems I can safely ignore. Bliss.

And yes, I promise to avoid putting several AVs on at once in the future…

;D

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.
