I was surfing the web lastnight and my avast internet security popped up and said it blocked a Trojan. Some security thing popped up and said it was going to scan and I just shut my computer down and got it off the net. I turned it back on offline and everythings appears normal I updated malwarebytes, superantispyware and done scans and they found nothing but tracking cookies and it deleted them. I done a quick scan with avast and found no threats. But this morning I done the boot scan and it found this but wont let me do nothing but ignore it. C:System Volume Information_restore{A80475B6-CF6D-4B3A-BD21-B16C67DB5304}RP83\A0017869.exe It says severity is low. Says ERROR: The system cannot find the file specified (2) Is this just a corrupt file and it thinks it a virus or what? It wont delete, move to chest or anything I can just ignore it. Thanks for any help.
This is a file within a System Restore point.
The easiest fix is to stop the system restore that will wipe out all the restore points including the infected file.
Reboot and then start the system restore function again.
Thanks I will try this soon as I get a chance. I’m really not sure how to do the system restore but maybe I can figure it out.
Windows XP, Vista - How to disable System Restore
Thanks for the help. I think I got it fixed.
These are instructions i received on another web forum of how to fix your problem .
If there are no more problems or signs of infection, you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to “roll-back” to a clean working state.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
•Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click “System Restore”.
•Choose the radio button marked “Create a Restore Point” on the first screen then click “Next”. Give the R.P. a name, then click “Create”. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
•Then use Disk Cleanup http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskclean.html to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
•Go to “Start”> Run… and type: Cleanmgr•Click “Ok”. Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
•Click the “More Options” tab, then click the “Clean up” button under System Restore.
•Click Ok. You will be prompted with “Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?”
•Click Yes, then click Ok.
•Click Yes again when prompted with “Are you sure you want to perform these actions?”
•Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista and Windows 7 users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point in Vista or Windows 7 and Disk Cleanup in Vista.
•Then use Disk Cleanup http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskclean.html to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point. If you follow the instructions in the link provided by David, you will have already wiped out all of the old restore points.
Creating a new restore point without first removing the old ones, defeats the purpose.
If you read the instructions above you would have seen to exicute the instructions after the system has been cleaned of all infections . I’m aware of turning off SR but If you do a Restore , then create a new Restore Point , then wipe out the old ones per the technique above is basically the same as Davidrs’ link to instructions only shorter . Also it does not defeat the purpose cause once the computer is cleaned and no infections are present any longer then you would be crazy not to create a new Restore point cause if you don’t the program will do it anyway after it cleans the infection if the program is working properly . So once it’s cleaned why wait to let the computer program do it when you can yourself ? Either way a new RP will be created .
