Purchase a license now???

Avast Free Antivirus / Premium Security

I’ve been using Avast Free for several years. Suddenly on the Current Status page I have the following:

  1. A warning that I’m not protected with a “Fix now” button. I click the button and nothing happens.

  2. A warning that I need to purchase a license to stay protected.

Does Avast no longer offer the free version?

According to your image it shows the Firewall and that isn’t a part of the free version, so it does rather look like you are using the trial version of Avast Internet Security (AIS). See image extract of my avast free Status screen.

Did you at any time use the try AIS version ?

Not intentionally, and I don’t want it. Should I uninstall Avast and download and install the free version again? I’m guessing they slipped it through on me.

They just don’t slip it to you, you either have to download it or accept any offer to test it.

Yes the best thing would be to do a clean reinstall of the free version:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1426 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
