We purchased Avast 4 and have a license key. Can we upgrade to 5 for free? Or is there a upgrade fee. 4 was just purchased before 5 was released

You can upgrade to avast! Pro 5 free of charge, you can install the new version over the old one and the program will automatically convert your license into v 5 license 
Or you can go here - http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php and request a new license file with your current license (because v 5 uses new license files)

I dont have the 4.8 file to put back on then put 5.0 over the top. I cant seem to find 4.8 anywhere. Can I use the free version then put in my purchased pro code, then upgrade to 5?

You don’t need to install 4.8 first. You can install 5.0 right away with the new 5.0 key file. Remember to convert the license key of 4.8 to 5.0 key file first.
