???
Hello all, I just recently downloaded the trial version of PRO from HOME and it uninstalled it along with my quarintined chest files. Is this bad? I have a recovery program and went in and recoverd the chest file. I then tried to copy over the new chest file to replace. It wont let me even if I change the Read-Only properties. Is this posibile do I even need to do this and if so do I need to recover anymore files? Any help would be appreciated!
Why would you want to recover the chest files from the home version ?
The avast self-defence will stop you trying to over write files. The avast chest is somewhat special as it is a protected area, where the files are encrypted and the names changed to something different from the outside of the chest.
Even if you disabled the self-defence module replacing the new chest with an old version if likely to be a failure as somewhere the information on the data in the chest must be recorded and the two versions are likely to be different.
So what did you have quarantined in the chest ?
If it was infected you don’t really want it and the back-up copies of some system files are generated on the Pro trial installation. So I really don’t see why you would even want to contemplate this.
I wasn’t sure how it worked. I thought that it moved the infected files to the chest were they were encripted so that the virus was unable to operate. And I didn’t know if the file I was deleteing was one I was not suppose to be. Thats why I quarinted them and did not delete them when they were detected. Im not really sure how it worked thats why I posted this question. So your telling me that its cool to let all the files that were uninstalled go? And that the programs in quarintine are still on my computer somewhere just in operatable?
By the way thank you for the response!
Generally there is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.
However, having already removed them by uninstalling which removes the chest and its contents too, there is little that can be done to either confirm the detection by further testing, such as at virustotal (below). However, you can’t do that with the chest files you recovered because they are encrypted, with no way to either decrypt or add to the existing chest.
Also having reinstalled, you also don’t have the avast log viewer entries which gives much information , malware name, file name and location. So that information is also lost to us and we can’t really do any investigation, so I can’t say it was either good or bad in the files you sent to the chest having been removed. If said programs (which you didn’t mention?) are still on your system, are still working as you haven’t said anything
I can only presume that having done so the programs that theses files came from are still working, so it isn’t all bad news, but without full information there really is no way to accurately determine this…
There is some confusion here as when you mention programs in quarantine that isn’t my interpretation of quarantine, a file from a program might have been sent to the chest
So it would have been prudent to ask the question first before uninstalling, where we might have been able to help more.
VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first.
:-\ Your right I should of asked you all before I uninstalled it. But I guess I just thought it would transfer the chest along with anyother important info to the new version. I can pretty much recover any file you want from my PC as long as it hasn’t been overwritten. I havent empteyed my recycle bin lately to help slow the process. What files did you want me to look for.
You can transfer files from Chest from one computer to another… but if you uninstall avast, the files are gone, they’re not on the recycle bin.
Chest folder: \Data\Chest
I can retrive the files that were uninstalled. When something is deleted from your PC it is not really deleted. It is marked for deletion but it looks like its not there. It will be there untill the computer writes over top of it. I have a program that retrives these files and I can bring them back or totally delete them. Anyway I have not dumped my recycle bin to slow this process. What files would like me to bring you back. I already reteived the chest file.
???
Is the chest folder the only folder I would have to retreive to bring my Pro version of Avast up to date with the same knowlegede of the viruses and trojans that I have or had in my PC? If so I have already done so and I was wondering how exactly do I update the Pro version. I tried to go to the same folder in the Pro version and replace the chest folder but it would not let me do so. I tried to change the properites setting but it puts it back after I apply changes. I know a way to change the write protection in the reg but I dont want to do that if it can be done another way. I also don’t want to do it that way because of the same thing mentioned ealrier about the two different versions bieng encripted different or the programs not being compatible. :
