Question about Avast (latest edition) mail provider + netscape mail 7.2

I use netscape mail 7.2 as indicated above and I recently installed the latest Avast program and now I can’t access my mail while its running. I’m using windows XP and I was using AVG (but it kept downloading an update, asking me to restart and then stopping working till I uninstalled/reinstalled) so I uninstalled that and completely deleted its program folder. Then I installed Avast to see if that works (still looking for an anti-virus program I like), since this is the latest version there’s no mail setup wizard and the programs stopping me getting any mail.

I know its Avast because when the mail providers running or paused any attempt to get mail results in an alert box with the message “An error occured with the POP3 mail server. Mail server mail.ozemail.com.au responded:” and if I click ok nothing happens, if I click get messages back comes that box. However if the mail providers stopped (which requires a password every time I stop and start it) the mail comes through fine. Can anyone tell me what I need to change to get my mail to be received while Avast is running please, or is it impossible?

AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Does your email server use SSL/TLS secure email communication ?

I honestly don’t know, where would I look to find that out?

Your email account settings where your POP3 and SMTP port numbers are displayed and if SSL secure communication should be used. See image example, unfortunately it is from Outlook Express, but it should give you an idea.

Thanks, it has a box for it but its not checked.

OK that is one area which shouldn’t give any problem, but If you haven’t run the avg remover I would give that priority as this is one area where there could be a clash.

Something I missed in your first post, you don’t need the mail setup wizard unless you have win9x or winME, you have XP so the email provider setup is transparent.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and try checking your email again, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

I also missed the password bit in stopping or starting the Internet Mail provider, you would only need to enter a password if you actually set a password in the first place as this isn’t a default action. Did you set a password ?

Right in order.

I’ve run the AVG remover so that shouldn’t be a problem, thanks.

Good?

  1. What is your firewall ?

I’m using Comodo at the moment.

I don’t know, again where would I find this information please?

Yes it came up so I entered it assuming I had too, thanks to this comment I’ve set a new one with nothing in the new box so I’m not getting continually asked for one. Thank you very much, that was the main problem I’ve had with Avas so far, I don’t mind enabling/disabling the mail scanner (although I don’t like not having one to check my mail) but entering a password 6 times every time I wanted to do that was extremely frustrating.

Re 4. Sorry I don’t use Comodo, you will have to rummage around in its settings, program control, etc.

So I think when you find where to check the email scanner is allowed, etc. that will hopefully resolve this last issue.

Hmmmmm i don’t know if its related to other problems or just an install order issue (My SAM Hive got corrupted and I completely reformated my hard drive but when re-installing I installed Netscape after avast instead of avast after netscape) but the email scanners now working fine. Thanks for the help though.

You’re welcome.
