I just downloaded Avast for my android, and I would like the firewall but I need root access for that.
I wouldn’t mind rooting it, but is rooting the phone or system illegal?

Rooting the phone is not illegal, but depending on the telecom (company you got the phone from and subscribe to for phone service), it may void your warranty. This is true in some countries including my own. Therefore I need to wait until my warranty is up (2 years) before I can root my phone just in case I need to use my warranty. If you want to take the chance and root it prior to the warranty period is up, it is up to you. If you are lucky enough to live somewhere where you have no such policy, great. I hope this answers your question.
