I am running a very old Windows 98SE :Pmachine that I will use as a second internet node in my workshop. I just loaded Avast 4.8 Home. When I attempt to update the Virus protection files, after downloading it tells me I have insufficient system resources to updateā¦this does not surprise me. :-[ So, I went to the Avast website and I downloaded the most recent updates and ran it from my desktop. It tells me that my VPS is updated to the most current version for todays date, February 1, 2009.
When I look at āAbout Avastā it tells me a diferent story however. It says that my virus files are Compilation date 11/27/2008. ???
So, can somebody tell meā¦which is it reallyā¦Feb 1, 2009 or 11/27/2008. :-\
Maybe because I update it from the vpsupd.exe file that was downloaded the āAbout Avastā is not updated? ???
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select āavast! Anti-Virus,ā click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
This has been known to resolve this lack of synchronization within the program or I donāt know if you have rebooted (I donāt think it is necessary) that may also resolve it.
There are other issues in the bit of the log you posted other than the out of synch issue.
While I believe that Davidās suggestion is worth the effort ⦠I rather doubt it will be effective but I will be most happy to be proved wrong.
I do not have a Win98 system but today I fired up my WinMe 1997 Toshiba laptop with similar specs to yours. My logs show I lasted turned it on 11 December 2008. So it had almost 2 months of avast updates to get through ⦠it made it but it took 30 minutes to get through the updates.
However here are, what I believe, the most telling lines in the logs showing the differences in our systems:
We both have a very similar physical memory, you have a little more than 1Mb of free memory, I have about 36Mb of free memory. The current avast VPS database is about 22Mb. I suspect that 1Mb of free memory is going to be a problem. You may want to look at your system start-up and see if you can reduce the load of the functions running on your system to free up more memory for avast to get the job done.
I too hope that a clean reinstall might work as we both know that the Update process if both Memory and CPU intensive, perhaps an installation might be less so. Though that wouldnāt get around this on future updates, the installation of a little more memory might help or as you say ensure non-essential applications arenāt running in the background.
