Question about Avast updates

I am running a very old Windows 98SE :Pmachine that I will use as a second internet node in my workshop. I just loaded Avast 4.8 Home. When I attempt to update the Virus protection files, after downloading it tells me I have insufficient system resources to update…this does not surprise me. :-[ So, I went to the Avast website and I downloaded the most recent updates and ran it from my desktop. It tells me that my VPS is updated to the most current version for todays date, February 1, 2009.

When I look at ā€œAbout Avastā€ it tells me a diferent story however. It says that my virus files are Compilation date 11/27/2008. ???

So, can somebody tell me…which is it really…Feb 1, 2009 or 11/27/2008. :-\

Maybe because I update it from the vpsupd.exe file that was downloaded the ā€œAbout Avastā€ is not updated? ???

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ā€˜avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

This has been known to resolve this lack of synchronization within the program or I don’t know if you have rebooted (I don’t think it is necessary) that may also resolve it.

Tried your recommendation. It did not work. I’ve posted the log results if this helps. Thanks

There are other issues in the bit of the log you posted other than the out of synch issue.

I would suggest a clean reinstall of avast.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

As David said:

While I believe that David’s suggestion is worth the effort … I rather doubt it will be effective but I will be most happy to be proved wrong.

I do not have a Win98 system but today I fired up my WinMe 1997 Toshiba laptop with similar specs to yours. My logs show I lasted turned it on 11 December 2008. So it had almost 2 months of avast updates to get through … it made it but it took 30 minutes to get through the updates.

However here are, what I believe, the most telling lines in the logs showing the differences in our systems:

Yours:

02.02.2009 19:05:27 system: Memory: 100% load. Phys:1124/97756K free, Page:1611228/1828576K free, Virt:2073216/2093056K free

Mine:

02.02.2009	17:22:58 system	Memory: 97% load. Phys:36656/97740K free, Page:1870348/1999408K free, Virt:2072640/2093056K free

We both have a very similar physical memory, you have a little more than 1Mb of free memory, I have about 36Mb of free memory. The current avast VPS database is about 22Mb. I suspect that 1Mb of free memory is going to be a problem. You may want to look at your system start-up and see if you can reduce the load of the functions running on your system to free up more memory for avast to get the job done.

Thanks Alan, I missed the 100% memory bit.

I too hope that a clean reinstall might work as we both know that the Update process if both Memory and CPU intensive, perhaps an installation might be less so. Though that wouldn’t get around this on future updates, the installation of a little more memory might help or as you say ensure non-essential applications aren’t running in the background.
