Hi,
I noticed that sometimes, although not very often, the window displaying “current status” (in screen shot), isn’t moving. Most of the time, the two yellow chords will animate with a pulse of light - indicating a connection. Right now it’s not pulsating, even though both “Reputation Services” and “Streaming Updates” are marked as enabled.
Also right now, when I check my update tab, it says “Connection Not Established,” but when I click “update engine and virus definitions,” is says I’m up to date.
So I guess I just want to know if all is well, as long as everything is green and apparently updated?
Thanks.
EDIT What I meant to say was that in the screen shot - there’s nothing that says, “Connection Established.”
Streaming updates are over and above the regular virus definitions updates.
There is no connection (excuse the pun) between the two, it is possible for the virus definitions to be up to date as that “Connection Not Established” relates to the streaming updates.
I disagree. Streaming updates ARE part of the regular virus definitions. And here is why. Avast used to do def updates more than twice a day. Now they are sometimes as much as 24 hours apart. That is a long time without an update. So Avast now streams updates on average 4 or more times an hour. So streaming makes up for the decrease in def updates therefore streaming is not over and above but critical to def updates that are now far apart. So when streaming updates stop on holidays or weekends or anytime and your last def update was 24 hours ago your computer is at risk. Internet scumbags don’t take holidays and weekends off and they certainly don’t wait 24 hours to send out new viruses.
Connection still not established.
I would say it isn’t something to be overly concerned with, there have been issues with the back end servers for streaming updates and they had got them up an running again. Now as an avast user I don’t know if this is another hiccup with those servers or not, but they have been working for me today (I received 38 of them).
When the next regular virus definitions update is received it contains all of the previous streaming updates and it removes the old streaming updates.
Avast still averages two regular updates per day though there is no fixed schedule, some time there are more than two a day and on other occasions there is only one. It has been that way for some considerable time and the introduction of the additional streaming updates hasn’t changed that.
As a point of note there were two updates yesterday, if you check the current virus definitions version is 130407-1.
There have been numerous days with def updates 20 or more hours apart. Even at 12 hours apart without streaming updates your computer is at risk. Maybe your streaming updates are working but mine aren’t and so are others. The fact that you claim to have received 38 streaming updates between the last two def updates proves my point that streaming updates are not just over and above the def updates but critical to the VPN updates which are now farther apart.
One more thing - For some reason I’m still not seeing “Connection Established.” So until the streaming updates start working for me again, is it enough to click on the “Update engine and virus definitions” button…and just keep checking in from time to time?
As I said the two updates methods are completely separate, the auto update (default setting) of the virus definitions should be sufficient. This should do a periodic check (default 240 minutes on the free version, can be reduced to 120) to see if an update is available and if so it is downloaded and installed.
I have just come back on-line recently and have had 13 streaming updates after boot, but the time zone differences may reflect little activity on the streaming updates.
Right now my Avast! cloud connection (and streaming updates) seem to be working intermittently - sometimes it shows “Connection Established,” and after a few minutes it stops - then it will start again. Are the latest updates still [ 130408.1 ] with program version [ 8.0.1483? ]
Also, if I keep losing my connection at random, should I try reinstalling Avast? (All my other programs are running fine.)
I’m not entirely sure if this connection would be established all of the time or if it has a time out at some point.
Reinstalling avast will do nothing for this situation, if it is the streaming update back end servers that are the issue, which appears to be the case.
I’m experiencing on-again-off-again connections - the same issue a few other people are experiencing. Any idea when things will be up and running again, for everyone?
As David pointed out it’s probably a back-end server issue.
Give it some time and you should be getting streaming updates again.
I didn’t get any over the week-end but I am now getting them.
As long as I get the “regular” updates I feel quite safe. 8)
