Question about Updates

I have avast set to manually look for updates. In my task manager in the processes I have aswUpdsv.exe running. Should this be running if I have my updates set to manual? Thanks
WinXP SP2

If the service isn’t running when you want to check for updates you will be out of luck without the supporting service.

Why would you want to set updates to Manual when the VPS updates are incremental and usually average out at 25KB or less ?
You could set it to ask if update is available if you are concerned about being busy.

David the reason I set it to manuel is because I am on very slow dial up and it seems if two things are running at once they are both slow. This way I check every morning and several times on the site and then I can do it with nothing to interfere. Thanks for the answer.

I’m on dial-up and 25KB VPS updates don’t hurt, I have both my Program and VPS updates set to ask, so it doesn’t really interfere. You select if you want it to update now or let the notification fade away and do a manual update when you aren’t busy (having been reminded that there is an update available). That way you don’t forget to update.

Thanks, David, just made the changes.

Your welcome

I have a PC that is completely segregated from the LAN/internet. Is there a way to pull updates at a machine that is on the internet, save to media (disk/usb key) then apply updates manually to the segregated PC?

Thank you.

Sure, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd.exe

Awesome! And this works with the home version also?

Sure…
The only thing is have avast Home version registered at that computer

Ok, last question… I am obviously cheap. I think I read that the free version will ‘phone home’ to re-register at the Avast site annually. Is this true? If I purchase & register the product (Pro?), can I just feed it manual updates as you pointed out and never expose it to the internet for ongoing use?

The Home version validity is 14 months. You have to register again for free here https://secure.avast.com/scripts/register.php?lang=ENG
The Pro version license is sold for each 12 months.

For virus database updates you can follow that link each time you want to update.
For the program itself, you need to download a full setup.exe file and run on the off-line computer.

Why? Why don’t you come back and enjoy the forums?

I will! Thanks for the awesome support!!
