I downloaded an mp3 file splitter that was in zip form. I pre-scanned the zip, and I pre-scanned the .executable file with Avast before opening it with no detection. When I opened the .exe I was goosed with a worm and 4 malwares which I finally got rid of.
Thus, my question: Is it typical that Avast will not detect these critters until I open Pandora’s box? thanks
bw
I don’t think it has anything to do with the ZIP archive (yes, avast! can scan inside of ZIP, and many other archives).
My guess is that this unfortunate incident was caused by the fact that the initial file wasn’t detected at all - and being either a dropper or a downloader, it extracted or downloaded other files to your disk - that already were detected.
Probably an encrypted .exe file.
EDIT: I didn’t notice igor posting before me: his advice is probably more authoritative.
