Question from newbe

??? I have just got Avast 4 .( Having got rid of Norton)
and zone alarm as fire wall. Just one question should the icon in
taskbar be going round and VRDB sayes “NOT DONE YET”
can anyone help

Hi Steve. Welcome to the forums.

VRDB is a virus recovery database that can help avast! repair some types of infection. Its not a true back up, just some information on systems files.

The database is generated when you install avast! and at regular intervals thereafter. The default is every 3 weeks, I think. While its being generated the i-icon will spin to show you its working. If this bothers you you can right click the icon and merge it with the a-icon.

Which icon ?
The avast ‘a’ icon rotates when files are being scanned.
The avast ‘i’ icon only rotates when the VRDB is being generated.

Did you not get the option of Generating the VRDB after installation ?
If not no problem, all that is being reported is you haven’t run it yet. To do so right click the ‘i’ icon and select Generate Now, the first time this is run it takes a little longer (mine takes about 7 minutes, but is dependant on a number of things).

Once you have run it, you should decide how you want it to be updated (every 21 days by default), when your system is idle or when the screen saver is running, tick the one you want.

Thanks for quick reply . I don,t have the i-icon at all since i started after installation just a-icon which i thought was to rotate to show it was working. any tips gratfully received ::slight_smile:

Maybe the icons are already merged. Right click the a-icon and see if you have an option under VRDB to “split into two icons …”

I don,t even have that option.

The answer is in your question. Norton is a B**ch to remove. See Techs post in this thread for Norton removal http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=18511.0

Sometimes leftovers from a prior Norton installation will cause problems when installing avast!.

Try running SymNRT available here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Then, in Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel click Change/Remove for avast! Run the Repair Option making sure you’re on line when you do. If this doesn’t work you might need to re-install avast!

And as David said, the a-icon only rotates when scanning. This shouldn’t happen continuously.

 Hi Steve :

It appears you got an incomplete installation of Avast
because Norton AV was NOT completely removed from the
machine. In addition to "uninstalling" from "Add/Remove
Programs" ( I had to uninstall 3 "components" ) and
running the SymNRT "tool", you should use your machine's
"Search > All files and folders", entering the Search "term"
"Symantec" and later on "Norton" and try to "Delete" all
appropiate items that are listed. Then, if possible, use a
SAFE "registry cleaner" to remove additional items. Then
your machine would be rid of Norton, allowing a complete
 installation of Avast .

;D Solved Have sorted Prob. Running Avast with Comodo as firewall :stuck_out_tongue:
Took some sorting getting rid of norton but all up and running now.
Thanks for info and tips much appreciated

Glad you stuck with it, Norton can be harder to get rid of than a virus ;D at times.

A belated welcome to the forums.

;D Thanks for the tips people i,ll keep my i on here for any tips
to keep things smooth
