Question on MS Windows system repair files

G’day all,

I would like to know more and why? how often do you do a windows system repair files from the original and owned MS Windows CD, I’ve heard this conversation from a group of people talking about a windows system repair should be done at least every 6 or 8 months depend if you’ve been doing installing extra software, uninstalling and cleaning out your register files from your PC.

I haven’t done a windows system repair on my XP Pro for almost 4 years, do you really think I should do a windows system repair from my CD in case something might happen.

It may sound like a dumb question but I would like your feedback about doing a windows system repair I do own a MS XP Pro CD, I’m just not sure if I need to do a windows system repair if this is the right thing to do.

Thank you and Happy New Year for 2010.

you don’t do it if you don’t have issues.

Okay I understand that, just in case it might happen how do I do a window system repair file from a cd.

I haven’t used XP for a very long time, the procedure was different from Vista/Seven. Anyway when you boot from your XP CD you’ll see the options. IIRC on XP there were two for repair, hitting “R” launched a console, and that’s not what you want, you want to use the menu leading to a complete repair procedure of Windows, can be as long as a fresh install. I tested that when XP came out, almost ten years ago now ;D
Otherwise, to make sure your system files are OK, you don’t need that. On XP, first put you Windows CD in the drive (while logged in), start a console window, and type SFC /scannow…this will review all your system files and compare them to the originals on the CD, and this will rebuild the dll cache as well. BUT DON’T DO THAT IF: your CD is older than the service pack installed

G’day mate

I have the 2 XP SP CDs available for a small shipping charge from Microsoft here just for insurance.

I use Acronis True Image 2009 for my backups that I run manually after a system update.

DO NOT PUT A SYSTEM ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT AT LEST SP1 AS IT WILL BE INFECTED IN A VERY SHORT TIME

YoKenny,

I already have my owned origional XP Pro SP2 CD, thanks anyway. and I do have Acronis True Image as well when I do a window update and I always clone my PC after the window update for safe keep  ;D

Logos,

I’ve already done a slipstream of my XP Pro SP2 and combined it togther with SP3 onto another CD without damaging my original XP CD, I did the slipstream option ages ago.

To completely understand what you’ve said to start a console window, and type SFC /scannow is that the correct command to type on the screen am I right. ??? ??? ???

OK if you got a slipstreamed SP3 CD you can run this command, with the CD in the drive

Thank you Logos for your help ;D  now I know what to do just in case.

The repair install on XP is handy but I wouldn’t run it unless I had problems. It can be finicky about how outdated the disk is. Another down side is it frequently requires repair of photo and video editing software.
