Question

My hubby has AVG anti-virus on WinXP. He got an alert of a virus last night and tried to get rid of it, but to no avail. He then decided to just restore his computer to an earlier date and that seemed to have taken care of it. What I would like to know is, even tho he set the restore point back, does he still have the virus on his computer?

Thanks for any info anyone can give me.

It depends what software for restoring he uses. Usually, it monitors all changes in the computer and it’s possible to restore it back in time (i.e. before his computer was infected). This operation has some disadvantages: he doesn’t know how he was infected; he may be infected again in some hours/days/… he may lost data (documents, pictures, …) which were downloaded to the computer after the restore point, etc…

He’s using the standard MS-XP restore, pk…also he said he didn’t loose any images. It’s only programs that have been installed after the restore point.

Right now, why don’t you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.

Also, it will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator and/or a-squared (take care about false positives).
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

Tech - her hubby has no avast; so no boot-time scan is available. Guess you missed that.

Hubby says that he didn’t loose any images. The restore point only affects any programs that have been installed from the restore point, on.

He’s a real techy person and I’ve been trying to get him to use avast!, but he’s such a stubborn old coot and kinda resents it when a woman interferes in his domain. He has built and repaired computers for people for years. He built mine, but I keep mine in better shape than he does. ;D

Oopss… missed that.
Poor hubby that uses AVG… without boot time scanner.
Anyway, he could run a full scanning with AVG and use that antispyware I’ve posted before.

Yeah, he will do that. I’ll see if he will install the antispyware you posted, Tech.

Kilia -

I can relate to your problem. My lady will not leave McAfee no matter what I try. Some are just too hardheaded to understand. ::slight_smile:
