After 40 minutes of scanning it was up to 20%.

have you changed any of the default scan settings ?
do you have any other security programs installed ?
I have changed nothing and the only other things runnning are Spybot S&D.
Are you using the realtime protection of SpyBot ( TeaTimer ) if so then this is your problem as it’s known to conflict with avast, a better program to run alongside avast that works seemlessly and has better detection - protection is Malwarebytes.

I have not resolved this but confused this with another things that has been resolved.
I am trying to do a scan again…
And it’s a definate improvement.
