Quite anoying messages - update?

Hi!

avast! 4.5 Home / Win XP HE SP2.

When occasionally I have Internet’s access lack, and in the same time avast! wants to check for updates, it shows message saying “Server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx seems to be busy. What to do?” (or sth like that! Although I’m clicking that it should not wait any more, these messages pops again and again, until Internet’s access is restored and avast! can finally check for the update.

Is this normal?

Tom

How much time pass from one again to another?
Did you set correctly the options for Updates (Basic) and Advanced?
How did you connect the Internet?
Did you see ‘Settings’ on my signature and browse for best settings for your system?

I don’t remember now, but there is an info in this message that avast! waited… (180 seconds ???) and delays between this messages’ pop are quite the same as it is said in the messages box - so it looks like avast! would ignore (not remember) my clicking to not to wait any more.

Yes! No proxy, bases - automaticly, program - ask, connection - permanent.

I have a permanent Internet access through my LAN network.

I’m checking your quite long list of avast.ini file, but everything I report to this forum are my observations of using avast! on DEFAULT settings, as I changed nothing since install.

Regards!
Tom

If it the timeout settings, try to increase both timeouts (of avast into the Advanced tab of Internet Mail provider settings and of your email account, in Properties of the account, Advanced tab too). You can set both to 600, for instance. If you’re on a DSL connection (not dial-up) it shouldn’t be necessary a so long timeout anyway…

Do you use any spam killer? Sometimes the spam killer enters in a ‘loop’ and consume all the timeout. Shutdown it and start it again.

Done so! But I feel that we are talking about two different things. Timeout has nothing to do in here, because sometimes on my DSL there are 30 minutes peroids of Internet’s access lack! The problem is that I keep clicking, so avast! should not wait any more and he does not respond to it, because he keeps asking me. It is not a problem for me - I can click it a few times or change Advanced setting so avast! would kill connection after first timeout (currently set to ask). It is that I found I bug (as think so) and report this to you. In place of spending power to finding a solve for me, you should rather check if it happens on your or other user computers and see if it is really a bug or an occasional situation in my case only!

Nope! I use only SpamAssassin which resides on my server, not on my personal computer. I receive messages alredy spam-filtered.

Hi again!

Today for some time, avast! reported timeout askd if it should wait any more three times in around 60 seconds.

Tom

Tom, you can stay with the automatic updates if you select a greater value for the values [Sleep] and [UpdatePeriod] in [InetWD] section.

See Settings on my signature

Dear Technical!

But - as I said before - I only report a bug. It is not the problem how often the message pops! It is important, that I keeps clicking “No” in ask to if avast! should wait, and it still waits.

I can read your great explanation to avast.ini file and I can change my settings. But it does not solve the problem that avast! reacts inproper on user selection.

Shoudn’t we report bugs within this forum?
Tom

trejder,

If I’m correct the [Sleep] setting determines how long Avast wait before asking again. What is the value in your avast4.ini?

I had this problem for awhile too, I just set my connection in Options → Update (Connections) → I connect via dial up.

Would it not change anything else - like for example the method avast! uses to connect to server or sth? I don’t want to make signifcant changes or decresing it performance just to eliminate some messages that pops one day and another not…
