Ran Avast Home - now no IE8!!!

I got hit by a virus, not sure of the official name but its one of those fake antivirus warnings directing you to download “Antivirus System Pro.” It took over my laptop with endless pop-ups until I ran Avast.

I’ve only had Avast about a month and I’ve just assumed that it was running an automatic daily scan like AVG does. Turns out it wasn’t so this was the first scan I had run and it identified several Trojans and after that my computer was working again…

…except for one problem. I can’t use Internet Explorer 8. I’m running XP and I assume its Service Pack 2.

Anytime I try to go anywhere in IE, I get “IE cannot display the page.” Occasionally it actually does display a webpage, like the sign-in page for Yahoo Mail. But when I enter my name and password, it never takes me to Yahoo Mail, I just wind up with another “cannot display the page” message.

Firefox is working fine meanwhile.

I also just downloaded Malbytes AntiMalware and it identified a few more items which I deleted.

But I still can’t access IE. Any help please?? THANK YOU

Maybe you should follow these steps

Reset the Internet Explorer settings

If you have Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 installed, you can repair damaged files or missing registration information in Internet Explorer 7 or in Internet Explorer 8.

To do this, follow these steps:

Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.

This would work fine

If this steps are not helping you out. Try a reinstall by following this link

THANKS, Chris…

but tried both methods and neither yielded results. There is a troubleshooting tool but I keep running into a dead end there, because it asks for what type of connectivity I’m using and I check “wireless” (I connect from a free connection in the area). It then says Windows is not managing the connectivity and I have to refer to the app that is managing connectivity and I have no idea what that means. Meanwhile Firefox continues to run fine…
