My pristine computer suffered an accident and I had to buy a cheap second-hand laptop so I could keep working with minimal interruption. I won’t go into everything I had to do to this thing to get it into passable shape, but it came with microsoft security essentials pre-installed. I got a dos window popping up, so I ran a scan and MSE found something it called a “hack tool” which it removed. I’ve never really trusted MSE, so I uninstalled it, and installed avast free. I also installed malwarebytes free. Using windows firewall. I got the dos window popping up again a few weeks later. Ran a full system avast scan- nothing. Malwarebytes scan (including rootkit) -nothing. Did an avast boot time scan- still nothing. Any ideas?
Since it is a second hand system, who knows what is installed etc.
Perform a clean installation of windows, drivers and such.
What was the DOS window about?
Please follow the directions for scans in this topic and attach as many of the logs as you can run.
