You’re welcome.

Not so much for you but others that might read it later.

MS is doing emergency updates for OSes that are no longer supported Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 8, it doesn’t mention win7 so presumably that will come down on a windows update.

See http://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-releases-emergency-windows-xp-update-to-block-wannacry-ransomware-515689.shtml.

FYI, MS already fixed it in March for W7+, so if the updates are applied, you’re good to go.

Well, good to go only for now I would say.

Although the vulnerability in Windows has been patched, it only means a system can’t be hacked through it anymore.
There are of course other ways to spread this ransomware.
The code can easily be changed a bit and it will (at least not now) not be detected by the av’s that added detection as the detections added to them is “signature” based.
Also the “kill switch” in this version can easily be removed or changed.

I know that for XP a patch was released yesterday, don’t know about the other not supported Windows versions but I guess there is a patch for them as well.

Yep, see: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=66267.msg1393845#msg1393845

Would not surprise me if MS released them to prevent “damage claims”.

They certainly released them to prevent further damage…

Are you sure? My dictionary http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/ASAP says “Always Say A Prayer” for asap :stuck_out_tongue:
