I have recently download the home version of Avast 4.5 and can niether send or receive mail when it is on, to get mail I have to switch off the Access Control which defeats the object altogether. . The Programme settings don’t work either. Should it be personally configured before anything works. My computer setup is broadband and Windows XP Professional.
A little advice here would be very gratefully recieved.

The version 4.5 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Can you make a try and see if it’s ok? Thanks.
New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings
My pop mail is configured correctly but this is what it says when I have my Avast Virus detector on. I do not have any spam preventions at all so it cannot be that. Your help here would ne appreciated
The server responded with an error. Account: ‘mail.btinternet.com’, Server: ‘mail.btinternet.com’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 217.12.12.124 (217.12.12.124:110), connect error 10061’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90
I suggest you upgrade to 4.5.536 if you haven’t already done so.
Does this solves the problem?
May I suggest to check the firewall settings, too.

I do have a firewall as such Peter. Windows have provided it but it shows as if it is off all the time.
I have never been able to config that to stay on, it always goes back to off.
I do have Zonealarm but never use it now that Windows supposed to have given me one, maybe I should. I am puzzled as to why it is so stuborn, the last one worked well before I downoaded this one.
The Windows firewall only protects inbound, not outbound traffic.
Can you try the build 4.5.536? It solves the timout problems.

The firewall check came into my mind, cause this is always the first thing I check if a connection has problems - and - if I remember well in one of the posts was written “It’s always the firewall” - hmm, not in this case

PS: I would recommend in any way to install a personal firewall, like Zone Alarm, Outpost or Sygate

(I had problems sending with 4.5.523)
But if I do this the emails are sent directly without detection of my avast system!!! (there are no info boxes coming up in the lower right corner) So I updated from 4.5.523 to 4.5.543) let my redirection thing with 127.0.0.1 and it works as good as before.
Hello Eddy,
That is not exactly right, the SP2 XP firewall warns you when a program is trying to set a socket to stablished in output mode.
Alex GD,
read what MS is saying, read what other (indepent) organisations and companies are saying. And spend a little time to learn and you will see that I was and am correct (no offense ment)

I have both the Windows Firewall and Zone Alarm active and any warnings have always come from ZA and never from the Windows Firewall.
