RE Internet access

Please help ::slight_smile:

I have uninstalled Norton AV and installed Avast home edition.

Now when I try to access any page on the web I receive the message ‘page cannot be displayed’. The modem has authenticated ok, and I can ping the pages from dos.

What do I need to change? I have looked through my internet options and network connections, but can’t see anything obvious. Could it be port related?

???

Norton is notoriously difficult to get rid of and may be contributing to the problem.

However, it could also be your firewall (which is ?) blocking the avast Web Shield provider, ensure your firewall allows access for ashWebSv.exe.

What version of NAV did you have ?
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

The firewall I’ve been using is the windows one. I’ve tried to go into the settings for it, via control panel, windows firewall, but it asks me to start the service for this and ICS, which fails.

Sorry, I’m not at the PC at the mo so can’t tell you which version of NAV is used.

Also, I would like to use that tool that removes nav properly, but I can’t find a way to download the program other than directly from the site, which I won’t be able to do from the problematic pc as i can’t see the page. Do you have any other ideas?

The firewall I've been using is the windows one. I've tried to go into the settings for it, via control panel, windows firewall, but it asks me to start the service for this and ICS, which fails.

This may well mean that the XP firewall isn’t running or effective as it requires the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) ‘Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)’ service to be running. If you can check this type services.msc in the Start, Run window, if it is disabled, either set it to manual (which will allow for manual start) or automatic. You could also use Start, Run, type cmd and then type services.msc in the command window, see if there are any reasons for it failing.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential and this isn’t available in XP’s firewall.

There are others, Comodo, Jetico, Sunbelt Kerio, etc.
See some firewall tests for comparison, some are freeware but many are paid for versions http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php.
Also see http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml

If you also used the NAV removal tool you should be OK.

Great I’ll try that tonight - thanks very much! ;D

 Hi Bentown :

Since you are unable to view the NAV Removal Tool page,
I suggest you use your computer's "Search > All files and
folders" , using the search "term" "Symantec" & later
"Norton" and "Delete" all appropiate entries. If any do NOT
"delete", reboot the computer and repeat the "process".
IF there is any still "unwilling" to "delete", use "Unlocker"
 from http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ .
  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Full SymNRT info:

  1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
    a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat

    c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

  2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
    a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
    Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
    b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
