re. Update - Reboot - Version (from Beta)

Moved to here as Beta forum no longer accepting posts).

Hi, thanks for the log. It shows only installation of avast 4.7.1098 and failed at writing to avast registry keys. Please boot to safe mode and use avast uninstall utility downloaded here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

After uninstalling, check if file aswSP.sys does not exist in Windows\System32\drivers folder and also the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswSP should be deleted.
Then restart in normal mode and try to install new avast 4.8.

Thanks for this Forejt.

There is definitely something a bit peculiar.
Yesterday I seemed to be 4.8.1147; there was then an update that demanded a restart - so I did.

Now, tray icon - About tells me I’m on 4.7.1147 but Update via Add/Remove Progs. says 4.8.1147 and Check for updates says that 1169 is available, but ‘updating’ does nothing.

Still getting the demand for a restart after each update.

I’ve run the fix for WMI so perhaps another attempt at re-intallation might work - thank you for the instructions.

Do you mean that you cant download the latest program of AVAST? If im not wrong what your talking about now than try this step Right click avast tray icon>Updating>Program Update

Thanks rassel, but I have the latest version. Trying to update via either the Add/Remove Progs route or from the icon does nothing.
It says Downloading but there’s no download; then Installation (about 10MB); then says I have 4.8.1069 - alredy up to date. The Icon-About route shows 4.7.1167.
Most of Avast’s *.exe files are version 4.7.1069.
The Programm Settings - Troubleshooting doen’t have any of the new options!

There is not version 4.7.1069

Right click avast try icon> About avast!.. than see whats the last version you have now. If you cant get it see this picture.

rassel,

Giraffe already said this just above your last post:

The Icon-About route shows 4.7.1167.

It’s just what I got from the Properties - Version :frowning:

Well, followed Forejt’s instructions and, after a lot of effort (for some reason, when I’ve started in Safe Mode the apparently normal restart doesn’t load Avast and Comodo services, so I have to use F5 and go to last known good), Avast is up, running and showing 4.8.1169.

Actually, due to having conflicting information on version from 3 sources, I’m wondering if the version of the .exe files was munged as well. I was puzzled by the version here and carefully checked that it was .7 not .8.

Thanks to all for advice - bit happier now.

Oh no - just noticed that none of the changes that I make in Program Setting will hold - they all just revert to default.
Changes in the providers do hold OK. Oh dear. ::slight_smile:

It means that the changes cannot be written into the ini file…

Do you have any special access rights set to the folders?
Are you logged on as an administrator or “ordinary” user?

AFAIK I have full rights - certainly can install or change anything. I don’t ‘log on’ but XP just boots straight in.

If the file is avast4.ini, it has no special characteristics, not even read-only.

Giraffe, in other thread I’ve suggested you an installation from the scratch.
Did you try it?

Yes, yesterday, following Forejt’s instructions above.
At least this time Avast is up and running, with only the licence key and settings not holding (I can change other things and define apps. to ignore), so I’d be reluctant to go through it all again.

I can’t see anything else that I can do!

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Giraffe, could you please send me an export of the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswSP ?
My hypothesis is that the self-defense module in avast does not verify any of the avast binaries as “trusted” which leads to all the problems you’re describing. It would be very interesting to find out why this is the case. And the key to this may be in that registry key.

Thanks
Vlk

As above, apologies for the delay.

Yes, Comodo 2.4. It has been asking me about Avast quite frequently.

Here’s a shot:
