NB: My Avast is updating automatically.
Hi
I’ve just copied some old files from my BU drive to my PC.
Avast stopped on 2 .htm files, saying that they were a virus: VBS:Malware-gen
I selected Move-TO-Chest.
I see from some old post that this may be an error ?
Can anyone clarify please ?
What should I do with these file ?
Can I remove the virus from them, or should they be deleted ?
Or are they safe ?
Thanks
Well to start with a) old BU files are less critical and b) .htm (web pages) even less so if they were from the browser cache/temp internet files.
I don’t believe it is an error to move a file to the chest as that is the safest option.
Unless you really know what you are looking for inside these .htm files your chances of finding and removing any inserted code is limited and you may possibly stop that file working anyway.
What are these .htm files anyway, e.g. where they located in the BU (or more importantly the original location) drive ?
You have done the right thing, ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
Deletion isn’t really a good first option (you have none left), ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.
