Greetings, can anyone tell me if the virus recovery database is available in Avast Free? If so, how do I access it? Thanks
Download and run: https://files.avast.com/ivps9x/vpsupd.exe
Hello Asyn and thanks for the prompt response. Not sure why I need to download, I was hoping there may be a setting on the Avast screen. Actually I was looking to disable it.
Sorry, not sure what you mean. What do you want to disable exactly…?
I’m not sure why you would ever want to disable the “virus definitions” update (if that’s what you mean) but you can by going to: Settings > Update > use “Settings” in “Virus Definitions”. That said, you should obviously want to leave the setting at “automatic update” otherwise the AV program is of little value as far as protection is concerned.
Apologies if I’m confusing you (I’m expert at that!) What I’m trying to access in Avast Free is the Virus Recovery Database. Can anyone advise? Cheers.
Sorry, still no idea what you mean…!? ???
What do you mean by “virus recovery database”? ???
I’m trying to access and view the Virus Recovery Database in my Avast Free, but I don’t know how to find it.
Do you mean the virus chest ? As there is no way you can read the database of definitions
In case you mean the virus chest: http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB21
I’ve been trying for some time to find out why my computer has slowed to the proverbial crawl. Long job, ruled out quite a few things and posted the problem on PC Advisors help forum and also Web Users forum. Had plenty of suggestions, one was from a contributor who said that in older versions of Avast, the Virus Recovery Database caused the same slow running problem. Avast is damn good, but I’ve discovered that on certain computers parts of it can cause problems. EG, the Mail Shield was stopping emails arriving from a club I’m a member of…disabled the shield and bingo…mails started coming through, As test I re-enabled it and the emails were blocked again…disabled it again and now they’re back. Could I ask you (When you’ve got a spare moment) to Google Avast Virus Recovery Database, there’s lots about it there. Thanks and sorry for the confusion.
- Which version of Avast Free…?
- OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
- Other security related software installed…?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
Virus Recovery Database is going back to avast 4.x, possibly avast 5.x and it was the VRDB to give it its abbreviation - which is more likely to jog memories.
This function hasn’t been in use for some considerable time, so this shouldn’t be your issue.
EDIT: Removed duplication of my text.
There is no such thing as “virus recovery database”.
First of all, avast is not just detecting viruses but also other malware.
Secondly, avast is “detector/removal tool”.
Recovering a virus means you are putting it back on your system after it has been removed.
As far for the mail part, do you have setup your mail client correctly?
Including the certificate(s) ?
Ah, ok got it, VRDB no longer exists so that’s not the cause of my problem, I’m extremely grateful for all your help and patience. Asyn, for the record I’m using Avast 2015.10.2. 2214/ 64 bit/Windows 7/ I also use Malwarebytes Free and Superantispyware free.
Eddy, as David said it was back in avast 4.x time … used to fix damaged system files
First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:
- Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
- Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
- Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
- Reboot.
Thanks Asyn, I’ll give it a go but just wondering why you recommend re-installation…it all seems to be working as it should.
Well, if everything is OK, I wonder why you ask for help here. :
