I found this version exactly the same as the trial one that could be downloaded at www.ewido.net.
The features (paid ones) seem to be there.

The difference is that, the real-time protection and auto updates and other paid features are disabled by default, you don’t have to wait until the trial version is expired in order to use its free version.
I’ve just installed it and updater and RT monitor are active. So much for On-Demand only : The same reason why i hate Kerio firewall too.
There is no way to skip the commercial features and go straight to free ones only.

Even when the real time protection is either disabled or expires, you should check as there is likely to be a background service “ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard” for guard.exe still running when there is no need for on-demand scans.
Even when I manually disabled the resident elements this services was still running on boot, so I stopped it and set it to manual, just in case I need to start it.
Note that they’ve done some fairly major changes with 4.0. For starters, note that the tooltray icon stays even after you’ve “closed” it – all you’re closing that way is the GUI, the program itself is still active (even if you’re not using its resident protection).
Nearly all “quick” settings are accessible only by right-clicking the icon. I un-ticked “start with Windows” since I’ll be using it only for on-demand scans. And you can only shut down the program from there (“Exit”, at the bottom).
As DavidR pointed out, check (via Process Manager or whatever) whether its Guard is still running. If you’ve disabled both resident protection and auto-starting, you should only have to do that the first time, since it doesn’t seem to start Guard if you manually start ewido. You might want to look in processes and disable it (Guard) there, if you won’t use it, just to be sure.
I didn’t like the trial, so instead of waiting I shut down Ewido, set my system date to a month in the future, started Ewido back up it said my trial expired, shut it down again, started it up, then I was running the free version, nice to now that you can just download the free version now though.
Just to note: Ewido does not run in Vista (yet) 
Installs but does not run… Vista cannot solve the ‘incompatibility’ by itself.
I also installed the “free” version
ewido-setup_4.0.0.172a.exe
and ended up with the trial version for 28 days.
I don’t mind using the trial version, but don’t understand how they can advertise it as the real free version.

RoRo, was it a fresh installation or you ‘overinstall’ of a previous version?
I think the trial feature are there, the only difference is that they’re disabled by default and not active like in the common version.
They AREN’T disabled by default. I’ve installed Ewido on clean machine which never had Ewido installed and all features were active, including RT scanner and auto updater. It’s a regular trial version that converts itself into freeware edition upon expiration.
So… s*it to this ‘new’ setup ;D

I had also uninstalled the Ewido 3.5 and the 4.0 installation was clean. My 3.5 version was hanging up when I tried to open it.
I like the 4.0 interface and it seems to work much more quickly when scanning files.

I did the upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0 myself, uninstalling first (reasonably clean, I think – no problems so far, anyway).
I know that if you try to over-install, the installer will ask you to remove 3.5 first. And from what they’re saying at the ewido support forums (over at Wilders), the 4.0 installer will offer to uninstall 3.5 itself and apparently will do a much cleaner job than if you go the Add-remove route.
I’m a bit sad Ewido does not yet work on 64 bit systems…
Can someone suggest a good spyware/trojan scanner that does? I have Spybot S&D but will miss Ewido which was always my No.1.
New PC is very cool and fast but now I’m going to need broadband. Shame what we have here is not really broadband but I think things will improve now the government has “unbundled the loop” allowing for more competition.
At least I’m ready for Vista!
