Avast has been terrific.7.0.1426. On a test I unzipped a password protected zip file containing a few demo viruses. The File shield options for actions for VIRUS, PUP, Suspicious was DO NOTHING.
1.While unzipping I find Avast hog a major chunk of memory and also slow the unzip operation. The whole unzipping operation took a very long time.
2.After the files have been unzipped say 30 files , I ran a context scan and AVAST flags all of them. Now If I go to the folder and click on a file (flagged as virus) but without a valid extension I get the Windows alert of “selecting a program from list”. This I find strange , as AVAST should have blocked the file even as it were doubleclicked. Certainly AVAST should pre-empt.
3.A time stamp for the listed files in the FILE SYSTEM Shield log would add more versatility to the program.
4.In the actions choices , can a option for “BLOCK” be given. In my example here while I were unzipping AVAST would block the file from being created.
5.Can a report file for each scan created separately rather than being appended.
Though each software has its own merits and approach it would be practical to periodically better the competitors. I had been using AVIRA for quiet some time but quit after their servicing issues. Incidentally the real time file shield mechanism of AVIRA was generally good. As I said this was a mere suggestion for lookout for features.
Well, I can’t really comment on the “major chunk of memory” or “very long time” - because that all depends on the particular unpacked content. In any case, the newly created (unpacked) files should be scanned - which of course needs some time and memory.
No, I don’t think so.
You can configure the extensions being scanned in the FileSystem Shield settings (where specific file types may have special handling outside of these extensions).
However, I wouldn’t expect Windows to even touch the file before presenting you the “select a program from list” choice if the particular file extension is unknown - in which case the file certainly cannot be scanned in advance.
The file cannot be scanned before having been created - because there is nothing to scan at that time.
The scan happens after the file has been created (and closed) - so the “Block” action you are looking for actually means “Delete”.
You can check “Scan logs” in the Scan computer section - that’s where the scans are separated.
Just to make sure I had set the options to scan for all files while reading , writing , attaching. I find the AVAST alerts rather not steady. For some file the alerts came along with the Windows Prompt. For some it was not all there. If the same file for which Avast gave a alert is clicked again , there is no repeat alert from Avast. Images attached.I think some tuning is required here.
Yeah what I was suggesting was 2 prone for BLOCK. When a fresh file is tried to be written , AVAST should prevent it . When say a existing/ suspicious file is clicked AVAST should prevent access to the file. The user can have second opinion in that case. What is the best setting for what I have written here?
The scan logs which you mentioned just gives the details of virus found etc are not exhaustive like the notepad ones (report file) for the time, files , scanned etc.I think AVAST should consider that.
do note that if u checked all packers in file system shield, ur potentially causing ur system to run slow as file system shield will have to go through the many more files packed in different formats.
to ensure optimal resource usage of the pc, stick to default settings
